Chokebore is a Honolulu rock band formed in 1993.
Chokebore is best known in Germany through publications with Glitterhouse and a split EP with Tocotronic from 1996.
history
Troy had met brothers James and Jonathan as teenagers in Hawaii. They first tried to gain a foothold in the Los Angeles music scene before they got a recording deal with the Minneapolis-based label Amphetamine Reptile in 1993, where they released their first single Nobody / Throats to Hit . They then toured the US with Cosmic Psychos before releasing their debut album 'Motionless' in 1993. This was followed by concerts as the opening act for bands like Nirvana , Samiam and the Butthole Surfers . The music of Chokebore was already characterized by an extremely sad to desperate undertone, which is why their style of music was also referred to as sadcore . In terms of content, the band mainly dealt with the topics of loneliness, grief and death.
Two years later, Chokebore toured Europe for the first time with their second record, Anything Near Water . 1997 followed A Taste for Bitters , with which the band attracted more attention, especially in France, where they also recorded the successor Black Black in the Black Box studio a little later .
After that, Chokebore retired for four years before releasing It's a Miracle in 2002 . The album represents a turning point in that it seems much less tense and is more oriented towards the common indie rock.
The band's last release to date is the live album A Part from Life . Singer and guitarist Troy Balthazar released a solo album in 2006 on Sinnbusrecords . Drummer Christian Omar Madrigal Izzo now plays with the band Christian Death 1334 .
On November 18, 2009 the band announced their comeback via their homepage and newsletter : "We are happy to announce that Chokebore are getting back together again to play a handful of shows around Europe! […]"
