Joel Gion (born November 20, 1970 ) is an American musician . He is the tambourine player for The Brian Jonestown Massacre .

Gion appeared in the 2004 documentary Dig! together with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre and graces the cover of the DVD of the film of the same name. After band leader Anton Newcombe and guitarist and singer Matt Hollywood, he is the third longest member of the band.

He returned for their 2006 tour and continues to play tambourines and maracas in the band.

In 2011 Gion released his first solo vinyl EP Extended Play . In 2012, Gion released the single Yes as a foretaste of his upcoming solo album, which was released in 2014. At the end of 2013 he founded a new group, Joel Gion & The Primary Colors, consisting of Gion ( guitar , percussion and vocals), Brian Jackson (guitar), Derek See (guitar and vocals), Galine Tumasova (bass, vocals), Raul Sanchez (Drums), Yvonne Hernandez (drums) and Kevin Wood (keyboards).

In 2014, Gion released a solo album called Apple Bonkers on August 18 (UK) and August 19 (USA) . The album was co-produced by members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Collin Hegna and Rob Campanelle, with current (Daniel Allaire and Matt Hollywood) and former (Jeffrey Davies and Miranda Lee Richards) members, members of the Dandy Warhols (Peter Loew), Dead Skeletons (Ryan Van Kriedt) and Warlocks (Jason Anchondo). The album consists mainly of classic sounds from the 1960s with influences from shoegaze , post-punk, psychedelia, alt- country and mod / beat music .
