Yellow Submarine Songtrack is a remix album by the British musical group The Beatles containing songs from the 1968 film Yellow Submarine . The album was released on September 13, 1999 in the UK and Germany and on September 14 in the USA .
The film Yellow Submarine was re-released on September 13, 1999 in the UK and the following day in the US.
Emergence
The album Yellow Submarine was originally released in January 1969, six months after it opened in theaters. The first side of the LP contains six songs by the Beatles, four of which were previously unreleased. The second side of the album contains the orchestral score by George Martin . The film Yellow Submarine also contains other songs that were not used for the soundtrack album: Eleanor Rigby , Love You To , Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds , Think for Yourself , Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , With a Little Help from My Friends , Baby, You're a Rich Man , When I'm Sixty-Four, and Nowhere Man . Parts of the songs from Within You Without You and A Day in the Life are also alluded to in the film.
In 1999 a new soundtrack album was created at Abbey Road Studios , the orchestral songs by George Martin were dispensed with in the compilation of the songs and the nine songs listed and the six songs from the original album were used, without adding Within You Without You and A. Day in the Life . The 15 songs were remixed by Peter Cobbin and his assistants Paul Hicks and Mirek Stiles. The project was coordinated by Allan Rouse.
The revised and digitally remixed master tapes show numerous changes and adjustments compared to the original recordings, as Peter Cobbin did not want to reconstruct the original mixes.
- The title track of Yellow Submarine contains the line “A life of ease” by John Lennon , which was missing in previous stereo versions.
- Hey Bulldog was recorded entirely on just one four-track tape. The piano and drums were recorded together on one track and could therefore not be remixed separately. They are, while the vocals and the left audio channel Snare - overdubs of Ringo Starr are centered.
- The double tracking that was (possibly in error) in the first verse on the 1966 stereo version of Eleanor Rigby was corrected in the 1999 remix. In addition, the strings have been instrumentally separated in a similar way to Anthology 2 .
- The stereo version of Love You To has a shorter introduction than the original mono recording . This shortening was retained in the song track version.
- Acoustic guitars and percussion on the left channel have been removed for the new mix from All Together Now . Paul McCartney and John Lennon singing was centered while the chorus was split between left and right.
- The mix of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is essentially based on the original mix , the vocals appear clearer and the drums can be heard more clearly.
- In Think for Yourself and Nowhere Man , the voices and instruments were separated in the mix and can therefore be heard much more clearly.
- In Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , With a Little Help from My Friends , When I'm Sixty-Four and Baby, You're a Rich Man , the vocals are centered and the instruments are separated, the drums are more dominant.
- The song track version of Only a Northern Song plays the song in stereo for the first time. The original from 1969 on the stereo album was a synthesized Duophonic variant of the original mono version. A stereo mix of the song also appeared on the double album Anthology 2 with various overdubs and lyrics.
- The vocals, the choir singing and the instruments can be heard much more clearly in the new stereo version of All You Need Is Love and It's All Too Much .
5.1 mixes were also made for the re-released film .
To promote the sale of Yellow Submarine Songtrack in 1999, a series of promotions was started. These included a series of commemorative stamps, action figures of the main characters in the film and a variety of different Yellow Submarine products, such as mouse pads . Eurostar trains were painted with Yellow Submarine motifs. In addition, a life-size Yellow Submarine was shown on a promotional tour around the globe.
Yellow Submarine Songtrack was also released as a music cassette and long-playing record, pressed on yellow vinyl and black vinyl.
The album debuted on the UK charts at number 8 with 19,000 copies in its first week. It also ranked 15th on the Billboard 200 with 68,000 copies in its first week. In France the album rose to number 13, in Germany to number 11. In November 1999 the album was awarded gold in the USA for 500,000 copies sold.
