Only A Northern Song ( English Only a Northern Song ) is a song by the Beatles that was released in 1969 on the LP Yellow Submarine .

George Harrison wrote the song to comply with a contractual clause with Northern Songs music publisher that hired him as a composer . This song sarcastically expresses his anger at it.

"Northern Song was a joke relating to Liverpool, the Holy City in the North of England." (" Only a Northern Song was a joking reference to Liverpool, the holy city in Northern England.") George Martin and the other Beatles turned it down for the LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band .

The track was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on February 13th, 14th and April 20th, 1967 . Harrison took over the lead vocals and the organ during the recordings, which were underlaid with numerous band effects. The title has been revised for publication.
