1 is the twelfth compilation album by the British music group The Beatles after their separation, which contains previously released recordings, in the USA it was their tenth. The album was released on November 13, 2000 in Great Britain and Germany, on November 14, 2000 in the USA.
Emergence
The idea of releasing the British and US commercially most successful hits on one album was first realized in October 1982 with the album 20 Greatest Hits , although the content of the British and US versions of the album is not identical, as the number -one hits in the two countries are not congruent. 18 years later the idea was taken up again and an album was digitally edited chronologically from Love Me Do to The Long and Winding Road with 27 tracks . The album title 1 refers to the fact that all of the songs on the album were number one hits . The official UK charts of “Record Retailer” (later renamed “Music Week”) and the US American pop single charts “ Billboard Hot 100 ” were decisive . The titles were put together by the Beatles producer George Martin and the ex-Beatles Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr, who were still alive at the time .
In the British singles chart, 19 Beatles songs reached first place (from From Me to You on April 26, 1963 to The Ballad of John and Yoko on June 5, 1969 ). The titles Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out and Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby were both listed on the double A-side.
New Musical Express magazine listed Please Please Me as the Beatles' first number one hit. In the official UK charts, Please Please Me only reached number 2 and was therefore not included in the compilation.
20 of the 27 titles were listed at number 1 on the "Billboard Hot 100". For You Blue , which was published as a double A-side together with The Long and Winding Road , was not included in the collection because the songs are rated separately in the USA and For You Blue was not ranked . The title Love Me Do - in Great Britain in October 1962 with position 17 the first hit parade of the Beatles ever - reached the record label "Tollie" in the USA and in the course of the " British Invasion " on May 30, 1964 the top position there.
One exception is the song Something , written by George Harrison , which was not listed at number 1 either in Great Britain or on the "Billboard Hot 100". In the UK charts it came as a double A-side together with Come Together only up to 4th place. In the USA, however , Something was listed separately as the B-side of the number one hit Come Together and only reached third place there .
All tracks from album 1 are also on the compilation albums 1962–1966 and 1967–1970 .
The songs on the album were remastered by Peter Mew and his assistants Peter Cobbin and Steve Rooke at Abbey Road Studios . Allan Rouse was responsible for project coordination.
In Great Britain a vinyl double album and a music cassette were also released.
Album 1 debuted at number one in the UK, German and US charts a week after its release. It was the Beatles' 15th number one album in Great Britain, the 19th number one album in the USA and the eleventh number one album in Germany. In March 2010, the album was multi-platinum in the US for eleven million copies sold. In October 2014, Billboard Magazine reported that US sales alone were 12.4 million copies.
In Germany, the album was number one in the charts for nine weeks and was placed for a total of 73 weeks by 2016.
Album 1 reached number one in the charts in over 30 countries and is one of the most commercially successful albums of the 21st century with over 31 million copies sold.

2015 re-release
On November 6, 2015, album 1 was re-released for the second time. In this version, the songs by Giles Martin and Sam Okell were remixed at Abbey Road Studios . There are clearly audible differences in some of the songs. The mastering was done by Miles Showell, also at Abbey Road Studios. Giles Martin was listed as the sound producer.
- In Love Me Do , From Me to You , She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand and The Ballad of John and Yoko only minor modifications.
- With Can't Buy Me Love and A Hard Day's Night the vocals are more dominant.

- On Yesterday the vocals are clearer and the reverb has been removed.
- The drums and lead guitar were centered on Paperback Writer while the vocals were set to the right and left.
- Some instruments on the song Penny Lane are more dominant due to the increased volume.
- In All You Need Is Love , Hello, Goodbye , Hey Jude and Get Back , the drums were placed in the middle
- In Something the string accompaniment is changed in the stereo image.
- At Come Together , the stereo arrangement of the guitar playing was changed.
- In Let It Be , the stereo arrangement of some instruments has been changed.
On December 4, 2015, a vinyl double album with the newly mixed songs was also released.
Cover design
The album cover comes from The Team and Rick Ward. The back of the CD album contains four artistically altered photos of the individual Beatles. The photos were taken by Richard Avedon on August 17, 1967 . The four photos of the vinyl double album can be seen on the inside of the flip cover. The 32-page CD booklet contains a foreword by George Martin, the brief information on the individual songs comes from Mark Lewisohn , the printed international record covers were provided by Bruce Spizer and Joachim Noske.
When it was re-released in 2015, a red 1 with a yellow background was chosen for the combination of CD / DVD and CD / Blu-Ray instead of the usual cover design of the album (yellow 1 on red background) .
The deluxe version , which was released as a combination of CD / two-DVD and CD / two-Blu-Ray, showed a blue 1+ on a red background.
