Emergence
On October 31, 1963, Ed Sullivan was at London Heathrow Airport and watched the Beatles fans greet the group on their return from Stockholm . Sullivan was intrigued and told his staff it was the same as Elvis Presley . On November 11 and 12, 1963, Beatles executives Brian Epstein and Ed Sullivan met at the Delmonico Hotel in New York . Sullivan initially offered Epstein a single show with a fee for 10,000 US dollars , but Epstein had another proposal, which should bring the Beatles more attention in the United States and agreed to be here: The Beatles should instead occur three times in the show , at the beginning and at the end. The total fee was also $ 10,000. The contract was sealed with a handshake. Producer Bob Precht was concerned that the Beatles were unknown in the US, but Ed Sullivan thought it was a good investment.
On December 26, 1963, I Want to Hold Your Hand / I Saw Her Standing There was the Beatles' first single on Capitol Records . The single rose to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 18, 1964 . Two weeks later, I Want to Hold Your Hand topped the charts. It was the commercial breakthrough for the Beatles in the United States. The album Meet the Beatles! reached number one position on February 15, 1964 on the US Billboard 200 , where it remained for eleven weeks.
On January 3, 1964, a video of the song She Loves You from the Royal Variety Show of November 4, 1963 was played on US television on The Jack Paar Show . Brian Epstein and Ed Sullivan tried to prevent this in advance, as the Beatles were to appear exclusively in the USA for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show . But the Jack Paar Show further increased the popularity of the Beatles in the United States and it was noted on the show that the Beatles would appear in the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 . From February 7 to February 22, 1964, the Beatles went on a promotional tour of the United States. On February 7, 1964, the group landed in a PanAm plane at New York Airport , where 5,000 fans and 200 journalists received them on the tarmac.
The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show at CBS Studio 50 on three consecutive Sundays in February 1964 . Her first appearance on February 9th was watched by an estimated 73 million viewers, a record for US television at the time. The Beatles' songs were:
- All my loving
- Till There Was You
- She loves you
- I saw her standing there
- I want to hold your hand
The first three songs were played at the beginning, tracks four and five at the end of the show.
The following week's Ed Sullivan show , on February 16, aired from Miami Beach , where Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) was training for his first title shot with Sonny Liston . The event was used by the Beatles and Clay for promotional purposes. Three songs each opened and closed the show:
- She loves you
- This boy
- All my loving
- I saw her standing there
- From me to you
- I want to hold your hand
The third show with The Beatles was broadcast on February 23, but the performance was already recorded on February 9. Two songs were played at the beginning of the show and one title at the end.
The Beatles last appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on August 14, 1965, the day before their US tour . The program aired on September 12, 1965. This time the Beatles played the middle and final part with three songs each.
- I feel fine
- I'm down
- Act Naturally
- Ticket to Ride
- Yesterday
- Help!
In the show, joined, among others, Cilla Black on. The following day, the Beatles gave a concert at Shea Stadium in New York that was announced by Ed Sullivan.
Although the Beatles had their last live appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on August 14, 1965, music videos of the songs Paperback Writer , Rain , Penny Lane , Strawberry Fields Forever , Hello, Goodbye , Two of Us and Let It were released in the following years Be broadcast on the show.
Ten songs from the three February 1964 shows were used in the documentary The Beatles: The First US Visit , which was released on November 13, 1991. For the documentary series Anthology , which first aired in November 1995, two songs from the Ed Sullivan Show of February 1964 were used.
