The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (re-release: Live at the Hollywood Bowl ) is a live album by the British band The Beatles . The recordings were made at two concerts that the band gave in the American amphitheater Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on August 23, 1964 and August 30, 1965. The recordings were released on May 6, 1977 in Great Britain, on May 4, 1977 in the USA and on April 20, 1977 in Germany.
The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl is the Beatles' first album to contain previously unreleased recording material after their separation.
Emergence
The record company Capitol Records , which released the US versions of the Beatles' phonograms, was planning to record a Beatles concert in New York's Carnegie Hall in February 1964 for publication. However, the American Federation of Musicians did not consent to this project . Instead, a concert on August 23, 1964 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles was recorded on a three-track tape in front of 18,700 people, the sound engineer was Hugh Davies, the producer was Voyle Gilmore. The following songs were recorded:
- Twist and Shout
- You Can't Do That
- All my loving
- She loves you
- Things We Said Today
- Roll over Beethoven
- Can't Buy Me Love
- If I fell
- I want to hold your hand
- Boys
- A hard day's night
- Long Tall Sally
Although the Beatles liked the recordings, it was not published because George Martin found the sound quality to be insufficient; only an excerpt from Twist and Shout was used for the documentary album The Beatles' Story in the USA. However, mono tape copies were made that were used for bootlegs in the 1970s .
In the following year, two more concerts by the Beatles in the Hollywood Bowl, on August 29 and 30, 1965, were recorded, the sound engineer was Pete Abbott, the producer was again Voyle Gilmore. The following songs were recorded:
- Twist and Shout
- She's a woman
- I feel fine
- Dizzy Miss Lizzy
- Ticket to Ride
- Everybody is Trying to Be My Baby
- Can't Buy Me Love
- Baby's in Black
- I want to be your man
- A hard day's night
- Help!
- I'm down
These recordings also seemed unsuitable for publication in terms of quality.
In 1971, Phil Spector was given the task of producing a live album from the recordings, but this did not lead to any result.
In 1976 the Beatles producer George Martin was asked by the then President of Capitol Records, Bhaskar Menon, to revise the recordings for a release, as there was now a great demand for a live Beatles album and the album Live! at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962 was announced by another record company. Voyle Gilmore was asked to locate the original tapes at Capitol Records as he still knew where they were put in the 1960s.
Martin initially had difficulties in organizing a suitable tape recorder to play the tapes. The device he and sound engineer Geoff Emerick were using quickly overheated and had to be cooled with a converted vacuum cleaner . Ultimately, they transferred the three-track tapes to a 24-track tape and put 13 songs together, although the recordings from August 29, 1965 were not taken into account. (According to other sources, it was an error, as Ticket To Ride , Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Help! Are from August 29, 1965 and not, as stated, August 30, 1965) wrote about the other problems with the production of the live album Martin in the Liner Notes : "The screeching from 17,000 healthy, young lungs would have drowned out even a jet ."
The post-production for the album took place in January 1977 at AIR Studios in London . The mastering of the long-playing record was done by Wally Traugott and Geoff Emerick.
The songs that weren't used for the album from the 1964 concert are: Twist and Shout , You Can't Do That , Can't Buy Me Love , If I Fell , I Want to Hold Your Hand, and A Hard Day's Night . The songs that weren't used from the 1965 concert are: I Feel Fine , Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby , Baby's in Black , I Wanna Be Your Man , and I'm Down .
From the album Anthology 2 , the single Real Love / Baby's in Black (Live) was released on December 12, 1995 , the song Baby's in Black (Live) not being included on the album and on August 30, 1965 during the Hollywood concert has been recorded.
The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl was released twelve and thirteen years after its recording as the Beatles' first and only official live album on May 4, 1977 on record and compact cassette, and this version was never legally released as a CD version.
In the UK, the album was with an advertising budget of 200,000 British pounds advertised on television. The album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl entered the UK charts at number one a week after its release. It was the Beatles' 12th number one album in Great Britain and was awarded gold there. In the USA, the album reached second place in the US charts. In August 1977 the album went platinum in the United States for one million copies sold. In Germany, the album reached number ten on the album charts.
Republication
On September 9, 2016, the album was re-released at the same time as the Beatles documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years under the modified title Live at the Hollywood Bowl . Giles Martin used the Hollywood Bowl recordings, as all other live recordings of the Beatles only existed in mono, and tapes were also discovered that had better sound quality.
After the sound-technical preparation of the original three-track tapes by James Clarke, in which the extremely loud screeching of the audience could be reduced, Sam Okell mixed them up again. The work took place at Abbey Road Studios . After revising the recordings, Apple Records , Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr decided to re-release the album due to the significantly improved sound quality.
The original track list was retained, as everyone involved had decided on it in 1977, and four additional bonus tracks were added. Furthermore, according to the CD booklet, the concert on August 29, 1965 was also taken into account when compiling the track list.
In addition to being released in CD format, the album was also offered as a vinyl album and in download format, and it was also available on streaming services.
Giles Martin, son of then-producer George Martin, was listed as the executive producer. Mastering took place at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Wharton.
Cover design
The concert photos from the first release are from Ken Veeder. Brian Murphy provided the tickets for the album cover and other Beatles memorabilia.
The design of the cover of the re-release comes from Gravillis Inc and Darren Evans and is similar to the cover of the DVD / Blu-ray of Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years .
