Baby's in Black ( English analogously: Girl dressed in black ) is a song by British band The Beatles , in 1964 on their fourth studio album Beatles for Sale was published. It was composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and published under the author's name Lennon / McCartney .

Baby's in Black is a joint composition by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song was written in a hotel during a tour in the summer of 1964. After the song was published, it was speculated that the lyrics of Baby's in Black were about Astrid Kirchherr . However, this was not confirmed by the composers.

Paul McCartney said of the song, “ We did Baby's in Black because we liked waltzes . And I also think John and I wanted to do something bluesy, something darker, more adult than just pure pop. "

Baby's in Black was added to the group's live repertoire in 1964 and was last played on August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park , at their last concert.

Baby's in Black was recorded on August 11, 1964 at London's Abbey Road Studios (Studio 2) with producer George Martin . Norman Smith was the sound engineer for the recordings. It was the first song the Beatles recorded for the Beatles for Sale album. The band recorded a total of 14 takes , with the 14th take also being used for the final version. The recordings lasted between 7 and 10 p.m. Lennon and McCartney sang into a microphone to form a vocal unit.

The song was mixed on October 26, 1964 in mono and on November 4, 1964 in stereo .

On November 13, 1964, the sixth Beatles album Beatles for Sale was released in Germany , on which Baby's in Black is included. In Great Britain the album was released on December 4, 1964, there it was the fourth Beatles album.

In the United States, Baby's in Black was released on December 15, 1964 on the seventh album Beatles '65 there .

In the spring of 1965, the single Baby's in Black / Rock and Roll Music was released in Mexico .

In Great Britain the EP Beatles for Sale (No. 2) was released on June 4, 1965 , on which Baby's in Black is also located.

A live version of the song appeared on March 4, 1996 on the single and EP Real Love and on September 9, 2016 on the re-release of the album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl .
