(1995)

Live at the BBC ( English Live at the BBC ) is the first compilation album by a total of two double albums of the British group The Beatles , the live recordings of the group , which in productions for radio broadcasts for the British broadcaster BBC emerged in the years 1962 to 1965 contains. The album was released on November 28th in Germany and on November 30th in Great Britain and on December 6th 1994 in the USA. The second album with BBC recordings On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 was released 19 years later, on November 8, 2013.

Live at the BBC is the second album by the Beatles to contain previously unreleased material after their separation.

At the beginning of 1962, Brian Epstein , the manager of the Beatles, tried to introduce the then little known group outside of Liverpool to a wider audience. He saw a possibility for this in appearances by the Beatles on radio broadcasts on the BBC. So he asked for an audition and was accepted for February 12, 1962 at the BBC Broadcasting House in Manchester . The Beatles - at the time still with Pete Best on drums - passed the audition and were booked for their first show. The responsible producer Peter Pilbeam was not very convinced of the vocal performances of the bassist of the group: Paul McCartney . His overall assessment described the group as:

"... not as 'rocky' than most, more country and western with a tendency to play music."

"... not as 'rocky' as most, more country and western with a tendency to play music."

On March 7, 1962, the Beatles' three-year series of regular radio concerts for the BBC began with an appearance on Teenager's Turn - Here We Go . The success of the Beatles later led to programs being produced especially for the group. This resulted in four holiday specials under the title From Us to You - based on From Me to You , the title of the Beatles' third single. The BBC also produced a fifteen-part series called Pop Go The Beatles , a reference to the popular English nursery rhyme Pop! Goes the weasel .

The Beatles' last recordings for the BBC were made on May 26, 1965 in London's Piccadilly Studios . The program was broadcast under the title The Beatles (Invite You to Take a Ticket to Ride) on June 7, 1965.

Between March 7, 1962 and May 26, 1965, the Beatles participated in 53 radio programs on the BBC . 275 recordings of 89 tracks (including the variation From Us to You ) were broadcast. Of the 89 titles, 32 songs were compositions by John Lennon and Paul McCartney . The remaining pieces were cover versions from different musical styles, most of which came from the rhythm and blues area. The Beatles never recorded 35 of these covers for any of their studio albums, so they are only included on Live at the BBC . The Lennon / McCartney composition I'll Be on My Way was also only recorded for the BBC; the Beatles gave this composition to Billy J. Kramer , also managed by Brian Epstein . The BBC recordings were made in mono .

Emergence

Bootlegs from BBC recordings of the Beatles have been illegally distributed since the 1970s . For the 20th anniversary of the Beatles' first appearance on the BBC, the BBC put together a two-hour program entitled Beatles at the Beep with songs and interview excerpts. In 1988 a series of 14 half-hour radio programs followed under the title The Beep's Lost Beatles Tapes . In the years that followed, bootlegs with complete BBC radio broadcasts from the 1960s with the Beatles were made.

In advance of the post-production of the album, Kevin Howlett, a BBC radio producer, looked for various sources for the BBC recordings, as the BBC itself no longer had all the recordings. On the double CD Live at the BBC there are 56 tracks selected by George Martin , 30 of which were previously unpublished, so six previously unpublished songs were not included in the album:

  1. Besame Mucho ( Consuelo Velázquez , Sunny Skylar )
  2. Dream Baby ( Cindy Walker )
  3. A Picture of You ( Joe Brown )
  4. Beautiful Dreamer (Stephen Foster / Gerry Goffin / Jack Keller)
  5. I'm Talking About You ( Chuck Berry )
  6. Lend Me Your Comb ( Carl Perkins )

In addition, the track Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport was recorded with Rolf Harris, which has remained unreleased and is only available on bootlegs.

In November 1995, Lend Me Your Comb was released on the album Anthology 1 , Beautiful Dreamer and I'm Talking About You did not appear until November 2013 on On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 , which includes a further 40 songs, 22 of which were previously unreleased . Besame Mucho , Dream Baby and A Picture of You , recorded in 1962, have not been officially released due to the poor quality of the sound.

The EP Baby It's You was released from the album on March 20, 1995 , although the songs I'll Follow the Sun , Devil in Her Heart and Boys are not included on the album Beatles at the BBC . While the versions I'll Follow the Sun and Boys are included on On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 , Devil in Her Heart in this version, first broadcast on August 20, 1963, is only available on EP Baby It's You .

The songs were post-produced by George Martin at Abbey Road Studios . Martin received technical support from Allan Rouse, Peter Mew and Giles Martin .

The album Live at the BBC debuted at number one in the UK charts a week after its release. It was the Beatles' 13th number one album in the UK. In the USA Live at the BBC also reached third place in the US charts and in Germany sixth place. In February 1995, the album was certified multi-platinum in the US for four million copies sold.

Unused recorded versions of songs can be found on the albums On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 and The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 .

Republication

On November 8, 2013 in Great Britain and on November 11, 2013 in the USA and Germany, the album Live at the BBC was re-released in a cardboard cover. The album was remastered by Guy Massey and Alex Wharton . Simon Gibson was responsible for the audio restoration. While George Martin was responsible for the post-production of the album when it was first released , Kevin Howlett, Mike Heatley and Jeff Jones were named as producers for the re-release. When compiling the titles, a dialog was exchanged (Ringo? Yep! For Have a Banana!) And an additional dialog (What Is It, George?) And a song (From Us to You [Closing]) were added.

At the same time, a cardboard slipcase with the albums Live at the BBC and On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 was released.

It was first published in download format on November 8, 2013 on iTunes .

Cover design

The album cover was designed by Richard Ward / The Team. The cover photo was by Dezo Hoffman and was taken on April 4, 1963 in front of the BBC Paris Theater building (Rex House, 4–12 Regent Street) in London. The introductions for the 48-page illustrated CD booklet were written by Derek Taylor and Kevin Howlett, the notes on the individual songs were also written by Kevin Howlett.

The cover of the re-release is black and white and no longer has a reddish-brown tint. The design of the revised cover and the revised, again 48-page illustrated CD booklet comes from Darren Evans. The CD booklet contains partially changed information about the individual songs and an added introduction by Kevin Howlett.
