Consuelo Velázquez

Consuelo Velázquez (born August 29, 1916 in Ciudad Guzmán , Jalisco , † January 22, 2005 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican musician and composer . Her works include boleros such as No me pidas nunca, Pasional, Déjame quererte, Que seas feliz, Yo no fui, Chatito, chachito and (best known) Bésame mucho , which she composed when she was not even 25 years old. Bésame mucho should change her life. The song became world famous and has been translated into over 20 languages ​​over the years and interpreted by countless musicians.

The exact date of birth is not known. Different sources give the following dates: August 21 (or 29), 1916 (or 1920 or 1924). Probably because of this, some sources state that Bésame mucho Consuelo composed at the age of 15.

Consuelito, as she was affectionately known by the Mexicans, was the daughter of a professional soldier and showed great musical talent very early on. She gave her first piano concerto at the age of seven . At the age of 17 she was already a music teacher. Later she played as a pianist with the Mexican State Symphony Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional) and with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the UNAM , the oldest Mexican university.

She married Mariano Rivera Conde, radio director, and had two children with him. Consuelo Velázquez was also politically active. From 1979 to 1982 she was a member of the Mexican Parliament , where she campaigned for the rights of authors .

Despite the huge success of her boleros, she always remained active as a soloist in classical music. Playing the piano was her passion, which she pursued every evening alone or in front of an audience until shortly before her death at the age of 88.
