Plaza Hidalgo in Ciudad Guzmán |
Ciudad Guzmán is the capital of the Municipios Zapotlán el Grande in the Mexican state of Jalisco . Ciudad Guzmán is located 124 km south of Guadalajara on the expressway to Colima .
For a long time the city was called Zapotlán , but in 1788 it was renamed Zapotlán el Grande to better distinguish it from other places of the same name and in 1856 in honor of General Gordiano Guzmán it was renamed Ciudad Guzmán. As a protest against the replacement of the place name in Nahuatl with a Spanish name, many long-established citizens still call their place Zapotlán. Officially Zapotlán el Grande led for the entire municipality, while Ciudad Guzmán referred only to the capital.
