The Japan Box is a compilation of five Japanese compilation albums by the British musical group The Beatles . The box was released on July 11, 2014 in Germany, July 14 in Great Britain and July 22, 2014 in the USA .
prehistory
In Japan, the Beatles' vinyl albums were pressed on red and black vinyl, and all albums had a strip of paper around the record sleeves, a so-called " obi " (a belt that is worn with a kimono ). The records, pressed on red vinyl, were based on the Japanese national flag .
The first album Meet the Beatles! (Catalog number: Odeon OR-7041), was released on April 5, 1964 exclusively in mono and was not identical to the US album of the same name.

Just two months later, on June 5, 1964, The Beatles' Second Album (catalog number: Odeon OR-7058), another album exclusively in mono, was released in Japan , which again had the same name as the American album would have. The track list was different again.

On September 5, 1964, two months after the British album was released, A Hard Day's Night (catalog number: Odeon OR-7123) followed, which had a completely different cover, showing the Beatles during the filming of their first feature film of the same name . The album was released in Japan exclusively in stereo .
On March 15, 1965, the British studio album Beatles for Sale (catalog number: Odeon OP-7179) was released in Japan, the original was released on December 4, 1964 in Great Britain.
With the album Beatles No. 5 (catalog number: Odeon OR-7103) was released on May 5, 1965, a separate compilation album , which in turn was only released in mono and for that the cover of the US album Beatles '65 was taken over. Beatles No. 5 is the first Beatles LP that contains the two German songs Sie liebe dich and Komm, gib mir dich dichotum together on one album. It wasn't until October 1979 that both songs reappeared on the album Rarities .
On September 15, 1965, a month later than the British original, the stereo album Help! (Catalog number: Odeon OP-7387), which has its own flip cover.
On March 15, 1966, the British version of Rubber Soul (catalog number: Odeon OP-7450) was published and two months later on May 25, 1966, Please Please Me (catalog number: Odeon OP-7548) and on May 30, 1966 With the Beatles (catalog number: Odeon OP-7449). Both albums had a completely different cover design than the original British albums and were only released in stereo.
Between June 30 and July 2, 1966, the Beatles gave five concerts in the Nippon Budōkan in Tokyo .

Emergence
On July 11th, 2014 the box The Japan Box was released, which contains the following five Japanese albums:
- Meet the Beatles!
- The Beatles' Second Album
- A hard day's night
- Beatles No. 5
- Help!
The mastering of the CDs was done by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios . The project was coordinated by Michiko Fujimura.
The box contains 69 songs, of which the song Can't Buy Me Love is double, as it is on the album A Hard Day's Night and also on The Beatles' Second Album . The album Help! Like the Japanese original publication, it has a gatefold cover.
The cover design of the CDs is based on the original LP versions , while the CD cardboard covers have reproduced inner sleeves. The CDs were printed with the labels of the respective Japanese LP first pressings.
The Japanese submasters were not used for the songs on the albums, but the remastered 2009 versions. For the album Help! the original stereo mixes from 1965 were used, which are also on the 2009 CD mono version, and not the 1986 mixes.
Cover design
The design of the box comes from Shuma Saito from T&M Creative . The CDs are in a cardboard box on the front of which the cover of the album Meet the Beatles! is printed. The albums and their covers are listed on the back, along with a list of titles. The five CDs are in a slipcase.
The box contains an illustrated 96-page booklet with explanations in Japanese characters about the albums and the lyrics of the songs in English and Japanese . The original pressings of the five included Japanese albums on red vinyl as well as the Japanese singles and EPs are also listed. The compilation of the book was done by Kunihiko Fujimoto.
