I Should Have Known Better ( English , "I should have known better") is a song by British band The Beatles in 1964. It was written by John Lennon , as a composer, however, Lennon and Paul McCartney with her common Copyright specified . In Great Britain the song never appeared as a single, but was part of the soundtrack to the film A Hard Day's Night , which was shown in Germany under the title Yeah Yeah Yeah . In the film itself, the Beatles can be seen playing I Should Have Known Better .

Lennon wrote I Should Have Known Better in January 1964 in Paris , where the Beatles were just engaged for a three-week stint at the Olympia . The album The Freewheelin 'Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan , which the Beatles in Paris listened to continuously, served as inspiration . When asked about the content of the song, Lennon replied in 1980 that the song was just a song without meaning.

admission

On February 25, 1964, the Beatles made a first attempt to record I Should Have Known Better at London's Abbey Road Studios . After three attempts, however, they gave up after Lennon couldn't cope with his harmonica playing. The following day, the Beatles played the final version of the song after improving the arrangement a little.

The song marked two turning points in the musical development of the Beatles: On the one hand, it was the last song whose main theme was played on a harmonica , and on the other, George Harrison's new twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar was prominently used, which created the sound of the Beatles in 1964 and 1965 clearly shaped.

On July 10, 1964, I Should Have Known Better appeared on the UK edition of the album A Hard Day's Night . The song was only released as a single in 1976 on the B-side of Yesterday .

In the United States, however, the song was released three days later on the B-side of the single A Hard Day's Night , which went to number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The US soundtrack album also features an orchestral instrumental version that was arranged by George Martin .

In Germany , I Should Have Known Better was released as a single and placed sixth on the single charts.
