Anthology 3 is the third compilation album of a total of three double albums by the British group The Beatles , which contains previously legally unreleased recordings. The album was released on October 28, 1996 in Great Britain, on October 29, 1996 in the USA and on October 25, 1996 in Germany.

Anthology 3 is the Beatles' fifth album to contain previously unreleased recording material after their separation.

prehistory

At the end of 1969, the Beatles' first long-playing bootleg record entitled Kum Back was sold illegally. The songs of the bootleg probably came from the acetate pressing of March 1969 of the then planned Get Back and later Let It Be album. In the 1970s, further recordings of the Let It Be sessions, BBC recordings and various recordings of Beatles concerts followed. Legally only the live album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl was released in May 1977.

Bootleg album Kum Back

In 1981 the sound engineer John Barrett, employed by Abbey Road Studios , was commissioned to catalog the recordings of the Beatles, in the process he discovered not only different versions of published songs but also previously unknown songs. Between July and September 1983, some of these songs were presented to an audience during a multi-media show at Abbey Road Studios . A music cassette containing some of the recordings ended up in the hands of bootleggers who then illegally published the material.

Geoff Emerick , a former Beatles sound engineer, first put songs together in 1984 for an album of unreleased Beatles material. In order to meet the tonal requirements of the 1980s, almost all tracks were shortened by cuts or fadeouts and remixed. The release date of the album named Sessions was definitely February 1985.

Only then were the Beatles Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr , who were still alive , and the representatives of John Lennon, who died in 1980, informed about the Sessions project . The three remaining Beatles intervened immediately against the publication and wanted to advise on the format of the publication. A copy of a music cassette from the Sessions album also fell into the hands of bootleggers , whereupon the Sessions album was illegally distributed.

In 1988, the first bootleg series was released Ultra Rare Tacks Volume 1-6 by Swingin 'Pig presented, the other unknown studio versions of the Beatles in excellent sound quality. The release of the Bootlegs meant that a wider audience became aware that unreleased recordings of the Beatles existed.

The book by Mark Lewisohn : The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years from 1988 chronologically lists all of the Beatles' studio recordings in Abbey Road Studios between 1962 and 1970 and officially documented for the first time which songs were included were unpublished at the time.

The first unpublished recordings of appearances on BBC radio broadcasts then appeared on November 30, 1994 on the album Live at the BBC .

After all right-wing parties had reached an agreement, George Martin began on May 22, 1995, with the occasional support of Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr, to listen to around 600 recordings of the Beatles, to select them for the albums of the Anthology series, then to edit and remix them. The decision was then made to publish three double CDs, which chronologically reflect the musical development of the Beatles.

The responsible producer of the album was George Martin, his assistant was Allan Rouse. The sound engineer was Geoff Emerick, while Mark Lewisohn helped find and select the songs for the album .

Emergence

Savile Row 3 , location of the last live performance
Test pressing of Across the Universe

The third double CD in the Anthology series contains recordings between May 28, 1968 and January 3, 1970. The album includes the following unreleased songs, which were recorded at Abbey Road Studios :

  1. What's the New Mary Jane
  2. Step Inside Love  / Los Paranoias
  3. Teddy boy
  4. Rip It Up  / Shake, Rattle and Roll  / Blue Suede Shoes
  5. All Things Must Pass
  6. Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues
  7. Come and Get It

The album's recordings include live recordings (on the roof of the Apple building), demos such as the song Junk , which was never recorded in the Beatles' studio , and unused studio recordings of published songs (outtakes), and remixes of songs from 1995 Outtakes were used from the original recordings for the albums The Beatles , Abbey Road and Let It Be .

When working on the anthology albums, the three remaining Beatles wanted to include the late John Lennon . When Yoko Ono gave them four earlier demo recordings of Lennon called Grow Old with Me , Now and Then , Real Love and Free as a Bird , they reworked the songs Free as a Bird in February 1994 and Real Love in February / March 1995 in Collaboration with Jeff Lynne digital and added newly recorded vocal and instrumental tracks. The four pieces date from 1977 to 1980, during which Lennon composed a lot on the piano in his apartment in the Dakota Building in New York and recorded his ideas on a cassette recorder. No other song was used for the album Anthology 3 . The editing of the song Now and Then was finished after one day in March 1995. In a press release on October 17, 1996, McCartney, Harrison and Starr announced that there would be no further joint recordings, making Real Love the last newly recorded song and single that the Beatles officially released.

The album Anthology 3 entered the UK charts at number four a week after its release. In the USA, Anthology 3 , just like the two previous albums Anthology 1 and Anthology 2, reached first place in the US charts and was therefore the 18th number one album there. In February 1997, the album was multi-platinum in the US for three million copies sold. In Germany, the album reached number nine in the charts.

Unused recordings and remixed songs from the Let It Be album were released on November 17, 2003 on the Let It Be… Naked album. Unused outtakes / jam sessions , remixed songs and demos from the album The Beatles and Abbey Road were published on November 9, 2018 and September 27, 2019 on the respective 50th anniversary edition.

After Anthology 3 was published, George Martin said in an interview: “[…] anything else should be called 'Scraping the Barrel'. Yeah, we'd have to put a government health warning on it! " ("[...] everything you have now [left in terms of material] would be described as 'scraping the barrel'. You should put a government health warning on it.") Geoff Emerick reiterated this opinion in an interview with the British Record in April 2006 Collector , in which he said there was no material worth publishing.

In December 2013, unused recorded versions of songs and the two demos Bad to Me and I'm in Love from 1963 were released on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 .

Re-releases

  • The album has been available for download from iTunes since June 11, 2011 . According to iTunes, the album was remastered . From April 4, 2016, the album was also available from other providers and streaming services.

Cover design

The design of the three corresponding album covers (placed side by side they create an overall picture) comes from Klaus Voormann , a friend of the Beatles from the Hamburg days in the early 1960s, and the photo-realist Alfons Kiefer. The cover design was supported by Richard Ward / The Team. The introduction to the 44-page illustrated CD booklet was written by Derek Taylor , the notes on the individual songs are by Mark Lewisohn .

Twickenham Film Studios

From January 2nd to January 14th, the Beatles were at Twickenham Film Studios, where they were filmed during test recordings for a planned album. Not only the potential titles for the album were rehearsed, but also (partly) unfinished songs from the album Abbey Road as well as titles that were only released on solo albums by the Beatles or that have remained unpublished to date. Furthermore, many older Beatles recordings were re-recorded as well as numerous songs by other artists. Most of the recordings were only alluded to or remained fragmentary. The audio track recordings of the film were made on Nagra tapes in mono. The following list therefore only includes a small selection of recordings, whereby only the first date of recording is listed:
