Ringo Starr fell out with the rest of the Beatles while recording the song Back in the USSR and temporarily left the band. He traveled to Sardinia , where he borrowed a yacht from his friend Peter Sellers . The captain of the yacht explained the life of the octopus to him in a conversation, in particular about the fact that they build a kind of garden in front of their cave. Starr took a liking to this idea and composed Octopus's Garden .

In early 1969, the composition of Starr and George Harrison was further expanded. The latter particularly liked the text of the supposed nursery rhyme , in which he recognized a deeper meaning. For a while, Octopus's Garden was supposed to be Ringo Starr's vocal contribution to the album Let It Be , but was ultimately not recorded for it. In the documentary Let It Be, however, a scene remained in which Starr and Harrison briefly allude to the song.
