With the Beatles ( English With the Beatles ) is the second studio album by the British group The Beatles , which was released on November 22, 1963 in Great Britain. In Germany the album was released on November 12, 1963, here it was her debut album . In the USA , a modified version of the album was released on January 20, 1964 under the title Meet the Beatles! released. The British version of With the Beatles was released on CD on July 21, 1987 in the USA .

Emergence

On July 1, 1963, the Beatles were back at Abbey Road Studios to record their fourth British single She Loves You and its B-side I'll Get You , which was released in Great Britain on August 23, 1963 and its second number there - one hit and the best-selling single in the UK by 1978.

In contrast to the previous album, the recording time of the album was no longer limited to one day. The first recordings for the album took place on July 18 and 30, 1963 at Abbey Road Studios in London . Many of the titles later included on the LP were created. Between the two days of recording, the group performed a total of 18 performances, often two per day. On August 3rd, the Beatles had their 300th and final appearance at the Cavern Club . On August 21, 1963, the previous recordings were revised and mixed in mono . A second series of recordings made on 11 and 12 September 1963 whereby not only more tracks for the album, but also promo - Jingles for the now planned Australia were recorded -Tournee. On September 30, 1963, George Martin recorded piano and Hammond organ tracks for the songs Money (That's What I Want) and I Wanna Be Your Man and then made various mixes of the recordings while the Beatles took a break from touring on vacation Greece and the USA were located. On October 17 and 23, after the musicians returned, extensive recordings took place again, with a four-track tape recorder being used for the first time , whereas previously only two-track recorders had been available.

As with Please Please Me , when compiling the titles, they relied on a combination of their own material and cover versions that were tried and tested during live performances . In addition to songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney , Don't Bother Me is George Harrison's first composition on a Beatles album. On October 17, 1963, the Beatles recorded their fifth British single, I Want to Hold Your Hand / This Boy, at Abbey Road Studios . The single was released in Great Britain on November 29, 1963, one week after the release of the album With the Beatles, and became her third number one hit and the second best-selling single in Great Britain until 1978.

The two number one hits She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand were not used for the album With the Beatles , a single from the album did not take place in the UK. In Germany, however, the three singles It Won't Be Long / Money (That's What I Want) , All My Loving / I Wanna Be Your Man and Please Mister Postman / Hold Me Tight were released.

The last recordings were made on October 23, 1963. On October 29 and 30, 1963, while the Beatles were on tour in Sweden , the final stereo mixes of the songs used for the album were finally created in Abbey Road Studios . The mono mixes took place on August 21, September 30 and October 23.

George Martin said of the album: “Back then we didn't think of an album as a single whole. We recorded singles and the songs that didn't come out as singles were put on an LP - that's how the second album With the Beatles came about. "

The song Not a Second Time caught the attention of The Times music critic William Mann, who wrote a musicological treatise on Lennon and McCartney's compositions that was published on December 27, 1963:

“The interest in harmony is also typical of their faster songs, and you get the impression that they think of harmony and melody at the same time. The major seventh and ninth in their melodies as well as the flat submediate note changes are so firm, so natural is the aeolian cadence at the end of Not A Second Time (the chord progression that ends Mahler's Lied von der Erde ). "

In retrospect, John Lennon said: "To this day I don't know what he actually meant by that, but in any case he made us acceptable to intellectuals as well."

For With the Beatles were available 270,000 pre-orders, a sign of the amazingly rapid rise of the Beatles to commercially dominant group in the UK . The album entered the UK charts at number one on November 27, 1963, displacing the Beatles album Please Please Me from this position and remained there for 21 weeks. In total, the two albums occupied first place in the British charts for 50 weeks in a row. With the Beatles was the first album by British artists to sell more than a million copies in the UK. In Germany, the album also reached number one on the charts. The British version of With the Beatles was released in the US on July 21, 1987, and in January 1997 the album was awarded gold in the US for 500,000 units sold.

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version.

The mono version of the album contains different mixes of the songs Money (That's What I Want) (different mix of guitar and piano) and Hold Me Tight (partially missing background vocals at the end of the song).

Other - unused - recording versions of the songs Hold Me Tight and Money (That's What I Want) can be found on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 .

Cover design

The design and photo of the cover are from Robert Freeman . The black and white photo shows the Beatles in penumbra. The recording was made at the Palace Court Hotel in Bournemouth . A text by Tony Barrow, the Beatles' press officer, was printed on the back cover.

In Germany, the album was sold with a modified front cover and a German text was used on the back that describes the genesis of the Beatles.

George Harrison: “The With the Beatles album cover became one of the most copied designs of the decade. Robert Freeman took the photos. We showed him the photos Astrid and Jürgen had taken in Hamburg and asked him if he could do something like that too. With the Beatles was the first album where we tried to do something artistic. "
