The Beatles Stereo Box Set is a box set compilation of all of the British studio albums by the Beatles music group . The box contains the twelve albums that were released between 1963 and 1970, as well as Magical Mystery Tour and the two Past Masters albums Vol. One and Vol. Two , which contain songs that are not on the regular albums . All recordings were remastered and published in this box on September 9th, 2009, using the numerical mystery “09.09.09” as the release date. At the same time, the compilation The Beatles in mono , which contains the mono versions of the first nine British studio albums, as well as Magical Mystery Tour and Past Masters .
Emergence
With the first legal release of the Beatles albums in CD format between February 26 and October 20, 1987, EMI decided that only the twelve British studio albums would be produced worldwide, in addition to the American compilation album Magical Mystery Tour added to the Beatles' core catalog. As with the first release of the Beatles albums on CD in 1987, the album versions that had been released in Great Britain were used. The US versions, some of which differed considerably, were not taken into account. The only exception is the album Magical Mystery Tour , for which the US version was used. Until the boxing The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 was released in 2004, no further US albums were legally released on CD.
With the box's release in 2009, the albums are all available in stereo on CD for the first time . So far, the Beatles' first four albums had been released exclusively in mono on CD . For the Help! and Rubber Soul , mixes were used that were made by George Martin in 1986 and released in 1987 when the Beatles' albums first appeared in CD format. The original mixes of the two albums from 1965 also appeared in the box The Beatles in mono instead . The albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Paul Hicks (sound engineer for the mono albums), Guy Massey (sound engineer), Sam Okell (sound engineer for the stereo albums With The Beatles and Let It Be ), Steve Rooke (mastering Engineer), Sean Magee (mastering engineer for the mono albums) and Simon Gibson (audio restoration). The entire project was coordinated by EMI chief sound engineer Allan Rouse.
The entire remastering process was operated chronologically from 2005. In addition to cleaning the analog master tapes, the volume was increased, while care was taken to maintain the original dynamics of the recordings, so unwanted noise and background noise were also minimized in only around five minutes of all studio recordings. The Pro Tools software was used to transmit the analog master tapes with a 24-bit 192 kHz resolution. After the transfer, the audio restoration of defective tapes and the final inspection by Allan Rouse and Mike Heatley took place.
The box contains 227 songs, of which Yellow Submarine and All You Need Is Love is double, as the first song is on the album Revolver and Yellow Submarine and All You Need Is Love on the album Magical Mystery Tour and also on Yellow Submarine .
In addition, the box contains a DVD on which there is a short documentation for each album, consisting of video clips and modified pictures of the studio sessions; accompanied by played music tracks, outtakes or studio conversations of the respective album. The voiceover comments are from Paul McCartney , John Lennon , George Harrison , Ringo Starr, and George Martin . The individual CD albums each contain appropriate documentation in QuickTime format. The documentaries were compiled by Bob Smeaton and Julian Caiden. The individual fold-out CD cardboard covers were redesigned by Drew Lorimer. Furthermore, every CD contains an accompanying booklet which, in addition to photos of the Beatles, the original cover text z. Includes information about the album by Kevin Howlett and Mike Heatley, and information about the recordings of Allan Rouse and Kevin Howlett, for example by Tony Barrow or Derek Taylor . The CDs were printed with the labels of the respective British LP first pressings, the CD Magical Mystery Tour had a label from Capitol Records .
In April 2010, the box was awarded multi-platinum for three million units sold in the USA (each CD in the box counts individually).
Cover design
The CDs / DVDs are in a black, elongated hard cardboard box, on the front of which is printed “The Beatles” in white letters and the green apple of the Apple logo , and “The Beatles” is also printed in white on both sides. The box has a magnetic closure, and it is also enclosed in a cardboard sleeve with the same imprints as the cardboard box, and the covers of the Beatles albums it contains are also printed on the back.
Missing stereo mixes
A number of Beatles songs were never stereo-mixed. This is due, on the one hand, to the fact that the original multitrack tapes were destroyed after they had been mixed in mono, and on the other hand there are two songs that have not yet been mixed in stereo despite the existence of multitrack tapes. The first category includes the titles Love Me Do , PS I Love You , I'll Get You and She Loves You . In the second category fall the two songs Only a Northern Song (it was only in the movie Yellow Submarine in stereo) and You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) .
