prehistory

The Capitol Records logo

After Capitol Records had turned down the offer to take over the EMI distribution rights for the USA for the Beatles, Vee-Jay Records concluded a contract with the Beatles, which initially did not lead to any commercial success.

In December 1963, Brian Epstein , the Beatles' manager, signed a recording deal with Capitol Records for future Beatles releases. On December 26, 1963, the Beatles' first single, I Want to Hold Your Hand / I Saw Her Standing There, was released on Capitol Records. The single rose to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 18, 1964. Two weeks later, I Want to Hold Your Hand topped the charts. It was the Beatles' commercial breakthrough in the United States. On January 10, 1964, the album Introducing… The Beatles by Vee-Jay Records was released in the USA , ten days later the album Meet the Beatles! . On April 10, 1964, the third album, The Beatles' Second Album , followed, which Capitol Records saw as the second album by the Beatles.

The Capitol Tower - the headquarters of Capitol Records in Hollywood

While in the UK the album format could contain 14 songs, in the US twelve or fewer songs were the rule for an album. Furthermore, in the USA successful singles of the Beatles were added to the studio albums, in contrast to Great Britain, so that a number of songs remained, which were then used for "new" albums. From The Beatles' Second Album , Capitol Records began to publish only eleven songs on their Beatles compilation albums instead of twelve in order to save license fees.

Capitol Records single Roll Over Beethoven

The album A Hard Day's Night followed on June 26, 1964 , it only contains music from the film of the same name. Since United Artists had financed the Beatles' first film, the US film company also got the right to distribute the soundtrack , so the seven songs on page one of the original British album and the title I'll Cry Instead were used. Capitol Records was allowed to release songs from the album A Hard Day's Night on their own albums as long as they did not market it as a soundtrack album, so on July 20, 1964 the album Something New was released. Shortly before Christmas 1964, Capitol Records decided to release Beatles '65 , another stand-alone album, largely based on the British album Beatles for Sale .

A total of six Beatles albums, which were released by Capitol Records, were released in the USA in 1964, including the documentary album The Beatles' Story .

On March 22, 1965, a replacement for the album Introducing ... The Beatles , entitled The Early Beatles , was released, as Vee-Jay Records was only allowed to publish Beatles records until October 15, 1964 for legal reasons. The album Beatles VI was released on June 14, 1965 , it contains the six songs from the British album Beatles for Sale that did not appear on the album Beatles '65 , the album also contains three songs from the British album Help! . In the USA, the American version of the album Help! Was released on August 13, 1965 . . In contrast to the British version, this album only contains music from the film of the same name, the seven songs from the first page of the British album Help! , as well as the instrumentals From Me to You Fantasy , In the Tyrol , Another Hard Day's Night , The Bitter End / You Can't Do That and The Chase . The instrumental songs were not recorded by the Beatles or George Martin , but by Ken Thorne . On December 6, 1965, the US version of the album Rubber Soul was released, the album contains only twelve songs, two of which, I've Just Seen a Face and It's Only Love , were already on the British release of the album Help! appeared. Rubber Soul was the eighth studio album released by Capitol Records in the US. ( Introducing… The Beatles , as mentioned, was released by Vee-Jay Records and A Hard Day's Night by United Artists , and The Beatles' Story is a documentary album .)

Emergence

With the first legal release of the Beatles albums in CD format between February 26 and October 20, 1987, EMI decided that only the twelve British studio albums would be produced worldwide, and the American compilation album Magical Mystery Tour became the core catalog the Beatles added.

On November 15, 2004, the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 was released, which contains the following four American albums, which were first released legally on CD:

The four albums were originally released in 1964.

On April 11, 2006, the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 was released , which contains the following four albums from 1965:

Some of the mixdowns were initiated in the 1960s by Dave Dexter, Jr., who was also an additional producer on the albums Something New , Beatles '65 and Help! is listed.

All CD albums have their original US stereo - as well as the mono mixes and their original covers as replicas in CD cardboard covers, the CDs also have a label from Capitol Records.

The original US albums from Capitol Records Yesterday and Today and Revolver were released in 1966 and Hey Jude in 1970 and were therefore not included in the two boxes.

Since the Beatles' first four albums were only available in British mono mixes until 2009, the boxed albums The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 and The Early Beatles offered stereo versions of most of the songs for the first time from the second box.

The remastering took place by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound Studios in New York , using the original submasters from Capitol Records and not the original masters from Abbey Road Studios , so that all separate mixes were faithfully transferred to CD.

In December 2004 the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 went platinum in the USA for one million units sold (each CD in the box counts individually).

In April 2006 the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 was awarded gold in the USA for 500,000 units sold (each CD contained in the box counts individually).

The CD albums in the boxes were not sold separately in stores. In January 2014, the box The US Albums was released, this contains 13 US albums.

The original mixes of the albums

During the production of Duophonic stereo mixes in the USA in the 1960s, mono master tapes were used, with the sound engineers sending the mono signal through two audio channels, with the low tones on one channel and the highs on the other optimally controlled the two channels are played slightly asynchronously so that a stereo effect is simulated.

Stereo version:
In the reworked stereo version of the album, no stereo mixes of the songs I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy were used , but so-called Duophonic mixes (fake stereo).
Mono version:
The mono version contains the downmixed British stereo versions of the songs.
Stereo version:
In the revised stereo version of the album, no stereo mixes of the songs She Loves You and I`ll Get You were used, but so-called duophonic mixes (fake stereo).
Mono version:
The mono version contains the downmixed British stereo versions of the songs. The songs You Can not Do That , Long Tall Sally (it was not a Hall used) and I Call Your Name (other mixing of the guitar and the cow bell at the beginning of the song) have new blends.
Stereo version:
The stereo version contains the original British versions of the songs.
Mono version:
The album has partially independent mono mixes of the songs Any Time at All (the piano was mixed in the background), When I Get Home (the piano was mixed in the foreground) and And I Love Her (simple and not doubled vocals). I'll Cry Instead was released in the USA in a version extended by almost 20 seconds on the mono version of the album Something New .
Stereo version:
The songs I Feel Fine and She's a Woman were mixed in fake stereo for the stereo version of the album .
Mono version:
Furthermore, the mono version of the album contains a different mix of the song I'll Be Back (the song plays slower). The mono version of She's a Woman was shortened and echo added, with I Feel Fine reverb was also used.
Stereo version:
In the revised stereo version of the album, no stereo mixes of the songs Love Me Do and PS I Love You were used , but so-called duophonic mixes (fake stereo).
Mono version:
The mono version contains the downmixed British stereo versions of the songs.
Stereo version:
Yes It Is was mixed for the stereo version of the album in Duophonic version (Fake Stereo).
Mono version:
No changes have been made, it contains the British mono mixes.
Stereo version:
Ticket to Ride was remixed for the stereo version of the album, and the mono version was converted into a duophonic version (fake stereo). The song Help! begins with the James Bond themerecordedby Ken Thorne .
Mono version:
The mono version is the mixed down British stereo version of the Beatles songs, the stereo instrumental versions by Ken Thorne were also mixed down.
Stereo version:
The song I'm Looking Through You ends twice just before the actual song begins, making it about ten seconds longer than the UK version. The stereo version of The Word contains a different mix (double vocals by John Lennon) than the UK stereo version.
Mono version:
With Michelle , the percussion accompaniment is more in the foreground, the song is a little longer. Otherwise the British mono mixes were used.

Cover design

The design of the two boxes comes from Wherefore Art? , David Costa and Emil Dacanay were responsible.

The CDs are in an elongated cardboard box on the front of which the Beatles and the Capitol Records logo are printed, the background colors are the rainbow colors of the Capitol label at the time. The covers of the four Beatles albums and the songs on them are also printed on the back.

The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 includes a 52-page illustrated booklet with a foreword by Mark Lewisohn .

The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 contains a 60-page illustrated booklet containing a foreword by Bruce Spizer.
