I'll Cry Instead ( English something like: I will cry instead ) is a song by British band The Beatles , in 1964 on their third album A Hard Day's Night was released. It was composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and published under the author's name Lennon / McCartney .

I'll Cry Instead is mainly based on the musical ideas of John Lennon. The song was not used for the film A Hard Day's Night , although it is on the studio album of the same name. The song was originally intended for the film, but at the request of director Richard Lester it was replaced by Can't Buy Me Love . The lyrics of the song expresses John Lennon's self-doubts, which were more evident in later songs. The music of I'll Cry Instead was approved by the US country music influences.

I'll Cry Instead was not included in the group's live repertoire in 1964.

I'll Cry Instead was recorded on June 1, 1964 in London's Abbey Road Studios (Studio 2) with producer George Martin . Norman Smith was the sound engineer for the recordings. The band recorded the song in two parts, for the first part they played six takes , for the second part two takes, with the sixth take and the eighth take for the final version being merged on June 4th.

On June 1, the other songs Matchbox and Slow Down , both foreign compositions that were used for the EP Long Tall Sally , were recorded.

The song was mixed on June 4, 1964 in mono and on June 22, 1964 in stereo .

On July 9, 1964, the fourth Beatles album A Hard Day's Night was released in Germany , here it was titled: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! A Hard Day's Night that includes I'll Cry Instead . In Great Britain the album was released on July 10, 1964, there it was the third Beatles album.

In the USA I'll Cry Instead was released on the local fifth album Something New on July 20, 1964. I'll Cry Instead was released in the USA in a version extended by almost 20 seconds on the mono version of the album Something New .

On July 20, 1964, the single I'll Cry Instead / I'm Happy Just to Dance With You was released in the United States , with the A side at number 25 on the US charts.
