20 Greatest Hits ( English for "20 Greatest Hits") is the ninth compilation album by the British music group The Beatles after their separation, which contains previously published recordings, in the USA it was their seventh. The album was released on October 18, 1982 in Great Britain, on October 11 in the USA and in November 1982 in Germany.

In May 1979, the album 20 Golden Hits was released in Germany, which was similar to the album 20 Greatest Hits, which was released almost three and a half years later, in the selection of songs and title .

Emergence

The record contract between EMI and the Beatles expired on February 6, 1976, so that EMI was entitled to publish compilation albums from this point on without obtaining the approval of the Beatles. The first released in 1976 was the double album Rock 'n' Roll Music , which in a broader sense includes rock songs by the Beatles, followed the following year by Love Songs , which includes love songs by the Beatles. Three years later, the album The Beatles Ballads was released, which was similar to the album Love Songs . In March 1982, Reel Music followed, an album that only contains songs from the five Beatles films. As the last theme album for the time being, 20 Greatest Hits was released half a year after Reel Music .

EMI originally planned to release a double album called The Beatles Greatest Hits , which would feature the 22 UK singles including the four double A-side singles We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper , Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby , Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever and Something / Come Together , making the album a total of 26 songs. It would have been the first album that would have contained all of the Beatles' singles, but only test pressings were made (planned catalog number: EMTV 34) and EMI decided instead to produce an album with number 1 hits . This selection made use of the 17 British number 1 hits including the two double A-side singles We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper and Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby , and Love Me Do was added, although the single was at the publication only reached number 17 on the UK charts.

On October 4, 1982, Love Me Do was re-released as a 7 "vinyl single and picture disk single in Great Britain and reached number 4 on the charts. On November 1, 1982, it was released as a 12 ″ vinyl single containing the songs Love Me Do (with Andy White as the drummer) / PS I Love You / Love Me Do (with Ringo Starr as the drummer).

In the US edition, the 20 US number 1 hits were used, which are not congruent with the British, so that another version of the album 20 Greatest Hits was released in the US . It was further Hey Jew cut for the album by two minutes. The songs I Want to Hold Your Hand and I Feel Fine appeared on this long-playing record in stereo for the first time in the USA . In Germany, the record company Odeon decided to release the US version.

In Australia , a standalone compilation of 23 Australian number 1 hits called The Number Ones was made and released in May 1983. The long-playing record contains 20 songs, an EP with three more songs was added to the album .

The album 20 Greatest Hits reached the top ten in the British charts, but could not place in Germany. In the US, the album peaked at number 50 and was awarded double platinum in January 1997 for two million copies sold.

All songs from the album 20 Greatest Hits are on the compilation albums 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 .

In Germany, but not in Great Britain and the USA, the album 20 Golden Hits (catalog number: Arcade-Apple ADEG 61) was released in May 1979, which was similar to the album 20 Greatest Hits in terms of track selection and reached number four in the German charts. The album contained the German number one hit Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and the German top ten single Michelle , both of which had not been released as singles in the US and UK. Also in 1979, the album Golden Greatest Hits (catalog number: ODEON 38 3083) was published in Germany as a club special edition of a book club . The album contains 16 songs.

The idea of an album with number 1 hits by the Beatles was resumed in 2000 with the release of Album 1 , this release was significantly more commercially successful than 20 Greatest Hits .

Republication

The album 20 Greatest Hits has not yet been legally released on CD .
