composition

Lennon wrote the song at a Transcendental Meditation camp when he couldn't sleep. The Beatles had just retired to Rishikesh , India , to meditate with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi . After three weeks of constant meditation and lectures, Lennon began to miss his girlfriend Yoko Ono . He was plagued by insomnia , which inspired him to write this song. Lennon later reported, “One of my favorite songs. I like its sound and I sing it very well. "

The insomnia theme follows on from an older Lennon song, I'm Only Sleeping , which appeared on the Revolver album .

admission

In May 1968, an early demo version of I'm So Tired was recorded at George Harrison's Esher estate . In terms of the text, this version is essentially the same as the later studio version, but it contained a spoken passage, as can already be heard in Happiness Is a Warm Gun :

"When I hold you in my arms,
when you show me, each one of your charms,
I wonder should I get up, and go to the funny farm.
No, no, no! "

Probably this passage was improvised as it was never used again.

On October 8, 1968, the Beatles recorded the song in London's Abbey Road Studios in just one recording session, including all overdubs . During the same session, the recording for the song The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill began. Paul McCartney's background vocals can be heard louder on the mono mix than on the stereo mix .
