Jack Yellen

Jack Selig Yellen (* as Jacek Jeleń , July 6, 1892 in Raczki , Russian Empire ; † April 17, 1991 in Springville ) was an American songwriter from Tin Pan Alley , who also wrote lyrics for Broadway and film.

Live and act

Yellen came to the United States with his family in 1897 and studied at the University of Michigan . He then worked as a newspaper reporter for the Buffalo Courier , but soon moved to New York City to write lyrics, including for Sophie Tucker (including My Yiddish Momme , music: Lew Pollack ). By George L. Cobb , he wrote a number of songs to Dixie themes ( Alabama Jubilee , Are You From Dixie? , All Aboard for Dixieland ).

His best-known songs include Lovin 'Sam (The Sheik of Alabam) (1922), Ain't She Sweet and Forgive Me (1927) and Happy Days Are Here Again (1929), co-productions with the composer Milton Ager , with whom he one Musikverlag (Ager-Yellen-Bernstein Music Company) and with whom he often collaborated (as with I Wonder What's Become of Sally from 1924), but also with Harold Arlen , Ray Henderson , Abe Olman , Sammy Fain , Joe Meyer , Lew Pollack and Samuel Pokrass .

His Broadway shows, for which he wrote the libretto or contributions, include What's in a Name , Rain or Shine , John Murray Anderson's Almanac , You Said It , George White's Scandals of 1935 and 1939, Boys and Girls Together , Sons o'Fun and the Ziegfeld Follies from 1943.

He moved from New York to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter and songwriter for 20th Century Fox . There he wrote for the films King of Burlesque , The King of Jazz (for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra), various Shirley Temple films and Night and Day (the Cole Porter film adaptation with Cary Grant ). For Glad Rag Doll (1928, with Dolores Costello ) he wrote the song of the same name with Milton Ager (music) and Dan Dougherty (co-lyricist).

From 1951 to 1969 he was on the Council of ASCAP . In 1972 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame .

His second marriage was to the dancer Lucille Day.
