George L. Cobb
George Linus Cobb (born August 31, 1886 in Mexico , New York , † December 25, 1942 in Mexico, New York) was an American composer .
Career
As the son of the businessman Linus B. Cobb and his wife Jeannette, George L. Cobb grew up in a middle-class family in a small town in New York State, before studying music from 1904 to 1908 at the School of Harmonie and Composition at Syracuse University received. The first compositions date from this period.
In his main creative period between 1909 and 1927, Cobb wrote mainly ragtime , blues , waltzes and marches. He became known with the Russian Rag from 1918 . This piano composition uses the main motif of the C sharp minor prelude from the Morceaux de fantaisie by Sergei Rachmaninoff .
