The apple variety Granny Smith (grandmother Smith) has its origin in Australia . Granny Smith is a chance seedling and was discovered in 1868 by Maria Ann Smith (1799–1870) from Eastwood near Sydney , Australia.

origin

Twenty years after the death of the discoverer of Granny Smith, Maria Ann Smith , the variety was first introduced at a local horticultural exhibition as Granny Smith's seedling (Grandmother Smith's seedling). Maria Ann Smith thought her sapling was a crab apple (Malus sylvestris) . Today it is assumed that the apple variety Granny Smith is a cross between the seedling of Malus sylvestris and the pollen of Malus domestica . The variety was introduced in England around 1935 ; Granny Smith was only known as an imported fruit from the southern hemisphere in Central Europe from 1950 .

In the mid-20th century, Granny Smith was the dominant variety in New Zealand . Granny Smith grows excellently under the conditions there - temperate climate, long growing season thanks to long days in autumn. The green color of the apple allows planting systems in which the trees are close together and little direct sunlight falls on the individual apples. The apples suffer little damage in transit, and consumers in the main markets of Europe and the US have found the fresh green color to be a welcome herald of spring. The success of Granny Smith led to producers in areas with long growing seasons (southern Europe, west coast of the USA) also growing it. Prices fell and the New Zealand apple industry began to switch in the early 1990s. While Granny Smith was clearly the dominant variety in New Zealand in the 1980s, it was replaced by Gala and Braeburn in the 1990s and by 1996 only made up nine percent of the apples grown in New Zealand.

Each October, Eastwood hosts the Granny Smith Festival , which brings more than 60,000 people to the Sydney suburbs .

Variety characteristics

The fruit has a lightly speckled green skin. Granny Smith requires a hot climate and a long growing period to fully mature.

The sour Granny Smith is popular for baking and cooking .

The strong acidic taste of Granny Smith is not caused by a lack of sugar, but by an increased amount of fruit acids. Granny Smith has about the same degree of Brix (unit of measure for the sugar content) as the sweet Golden Delicious, but about three times as much acidity.

Together with the apple varieties Braeburn , Gala , Golden Delicious and Jonagold, Granny Smith is particularly often mentioned as incompatible with other varieties for people with apple allergies .
