Eastwood is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales , Australia . Eastwood is located approximately 17 kilometers northwest of Sydney city center. About 18,000 people live in the suburb. It developed into a multicultural center with a large community of Chinese and Koreans. Eastwood is also known for the Granny Smith apple variety being bred and first grown there.

Early settlement

The Wallumedegal, an Aboriginal tribe , used to live in the area between the Lane Cove River and the Parramatta River . This area was settled by the Europeans after reaching the First Fleet in 1788, especially by the Marines and the New South Wales Corps . The place was named after one of the first Irish settlers in Australia, William Rutledge Eastwood .

geography

Eastwood is at the end of the Hornsby Plateau with the suburbs of Dundas Valley and Denistone to the south. In the west, the area slopes down to the originally forested Cumberland Plain .

In 1886 Eastwood was connected to the railroad that runs through Strathfield to Hornsby .

Eastwood Center

The Eastwood Shopping Center is at the train station and the central square, Eastwood Plaza, has plenty of cafes with outside seating. Eastwood is home to many shops selling Asian items, as well as Asian restaurants and supermarkets.

Buildings and Life

Eastwood has numerous historic buildings from the early colonial period, such as the Brush Farm House , the oldest and best-preserved farmhouse in Australia, built by Gregory Blaxland , one of the discoverers of the route through the Blue Mountains and other buildings such as the Eastwood House . Eastwood has Darvall Park and Brush Farm Park with old and rare trees, as well as numerous churches and schools. The village hosts the Granny Smith Festival every year in October, attracting tens of thousands of people to the village.
