Jonagold is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). It is also widely used in stores under the name of the color mutant Jonagored and under the brand name Red Prince . Jonagold was bred from Golden Delicious and Jonathan in 1943 at the Cornell University Research Station in Geneva , New York , USA , and went on sale in 1968.

Jonagold is one of the six most widely grown apple varieties in the world. It is mainly planted in Northern and Eastern Europe. Mutants with a distinct red color, such as 'Jonica', 'King', 'Jonagored', 'Rubinstar', 'Novajo', 'Red Jonaprince' and 'Jomured', are preferred in cultivation. These mutants partly differ in their appearance from the typical Jonagold appearance.

description

fruit

sliced Jonagoldapple

The fruits are large and spherical to tall, their height-width index is 0.88. Their color is sunny yellow, on the sunny side orange-red to bright strawberry-red. The lenticels can be seen as red stars or bright spots. The chalice is medium in size. The stem is medium thick and long. Seeds are formed irregularly.

The meat is yellowish, fluffy, short and juicy, later it becomes soft. They are edible from October. Their taste is sweet, fruity and slightly sour.

In particularly humid and productive years, the surface of this apple variety can have dark spots. I am talking about so-called Jonathan spots , which are passed on from the mother strain Jonathan. The taste is not impaired.

The sugar and acid content is medium to high.

Jonagold, together with the apple varieties Braeburn , Gala , Golden Delicious and Granny Smith, is particularly often mentioned as incompatible with other varieties for people with apple allergies .

tree

The plants are strong and rather slender. The shoots are usually inserted flat, many long shoots are formed. The leaves are large and boat-shaped. The variety blooms late and long and is fertile.

Cultivation

The variety prefers warm locations. She prefers soils that are fertile and deep. Flowers and wood are moderately sensitive to frost. The shelf life of Jonagold is very good. The fruits are hardly endangered by windfall.

Jonagold is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew , scab, and fruit tree canker. Jonagold as a triploid variety is not suitable as a pollen donor .

Mutants

Jonagored

The mutant Jonagored, which has a more extensive red color and is also marketed as Jonagored, and Red Jonaprince (brand name Red Prince ) are widespread . Common mutants are also Novajo , Jonica and Wilmuta . These have a lighter red color than the basic form, but also slightly lower yields.

The mutant Marnica is characterized by its striking red color. Because of its very juicy flesh, it is often used to make apple juice. In Germany, for example, the mutant is grown in northern German fruit growing because of its high yield.
