Wilhelm van der Haegen

Wilhelm van der Haegen or Wilhelm De Kersemakere , in Portuguese also Guilherme da Silveira or Guilherme Casmaca , was a merchant from Flanders at the end of the 15th century .

Wilhelm van der Haegen was the first settler on the Azores island of Flores around 1470 , which he left after a few years due to a lack of connections to European trade routes. He then settled on São Jorge , where he founded the first permanent settlement on the island around 1480 with the village of Topo .
