The Alaskan Independence Party ( AIP , German  Alaskan Independence Party ) is a political party in the US state of Alaska . Ideologically conservative , the party demands u. a. increased control of Alaska over matters affecting the state itself, particularly land development rights. In addition, the AIP u. a. for free gun ownership , home tuition for children and the suppression of the state from everyday life for citizens.

Founded in 1984, the party questions the legitimacy of the 1958 referendum that approved Alaska's accession to the United States . Party founder Joe Vogler said: “I am a citizen of Alaska, not an American. I have nothing for America and its damn institutions ”.

Earlier considerations within the party to aspire to join the Canadian state are now hardly discussed.

At the US level, the party is closely linked to the conservative Constitution Party . From 1990 to 1994, the party provided the governor of Alaska with Walter Hickel .

Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2008, Sarah Palin , was reportedly a member of the AIP, according to media reports. In 2008 she welcomed members of a party congress in her capacity as governor. Political website Talking Points Memo reported on September 2, 2008 that her husband, Todd, was a registered party member from 1995 to 2002.

The AIP is mentioned in the political drama Game Change - The Sarah Palin Effect (2012). John McCain's team of advisors learns of Palin's husband's membership in that party, which is seen as a problem.
