William Clay Matthews III (* 14. May 1986 in Northridge ) is a US American football poker players on the position of Outside linebackers . He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams and the Green Bay Packers , with whom he won the Super Bowl XLV . He is currently a free agent . In the 2009 NFL Draft , he was selected in 26th position. Matthews played college football for the USC Trojans the University of Southern California .

family

Clay Matthews comes from a famous football family. His father, Clay Matthews Jr. played 278 linebackers in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons . At the time of his retirement (1996) there were only two players in the history of the NFL who were on the field more often. His uncle Bruce Matthews played as an offensive lineman for the Houston Oilers / Tennessee Titans for 19 years . He is considered one of the best offensive linemen in National Football League history. In the 1950s, his grandfather, Clay Matthews Sr. , also served four seasons as an offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers . Clay Matthews III has three brothers, of which his younger brother Casey Matthews , also as a linebacker, is under contract with the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. In addition, three cousins also play football: Kevin Matthews ( Carolina Panthers ), Jake Matthews and Mike Matthews (both Texas A&M ) . His cousin Ashley Nick is also a successful soccer player.

NFL

After ten successful years with the Green Bay Packers , Matthews returned to his old home in Los Angeles. On 20 March 2019 he signed a two-year contract for up to 16.75 million US dollars at the LA Rams . On March 19, 2020, Matthews was released from the Rams.
