action

Nine-year-old Chip Winters has an impressive singing voice. During the school holidays he visits the Birchlake holiday camp in Maine and is quickly popular with the other boys. The composer Johnny Selden has withdrawn to a forest hut near the camp to work on his new operetta. Chip and Johnny are about to become friends. To give his friend a little bit of the flair of New York City, Chip Johnny reads letters from his mother Irene.

Irene and her fiancé Walter Mays come to visit the camp. She meets Johnny, who tells her about the first two acts of his operetta. At a party, former opera singer Irene performs one of the songs from Johnny's work. Walter is upset that he made Irene quit her career. Out of anger, he and Chip arrange to leave for the next morning. The dismayed Chip sadly says goodbye to his friends and leaves with his mother and Walter.

Johnny is also upset about Irene's departure. Frustrated, he hands over the last acts to his servant Joseph, who is supposed to hand over the scores to the producer Wagner. Joseph, himself an unsuccessful composer, sets out for New York with his friends Moreta and Brennan. However, on the way he loses the manuscript. In their distress, the three try to pass off their own material as Johnny's operetta. However, producers are put off from the work.

Chip learns of the problems with Johnny's manuscript. He hurries into Wagner's office and sings out parts of the last files from memory. He then reconstructs the rest of the operetta with his mother. The impressed Wagner starts the operetta. At the premiere, Irene also comes back on stage. Johnny attends the premiere and can hug the star of the operetta, Irene, at the end.

background

The film premiered on August 27, 1937. For Basil Rathbone , Make a Wish was a departure from his usual villain image that he cultivated in numerous films of the late 1930s. In the role of mother, the singer Marion Claire (1902–1988) made her only film appearance, otherwise her career was limited to stages and opera houses. Lead actor Bobby Breen later quit his acting career to sing in nightclubs and run a talent agency.

Jay Silverheels , known as Tonto, the companion and supporter of the Lone Ranger , can be seen in a small supporting role .
