life and career
Charles Richman made his Broadway debut in New York in 1896. He quickly got leading roles, probably also because he was considered one of the most beautiful actors ever in his youth. Charles Richman had a large female following and was a well-known figure of his time. At Richman's side, the later film stars Douglas Fairbanks Sr. , Ethel Barrymore , John Cromwell , Alice Brady , Basil Rathbone and director John Cromwell played. He also worked as a playwright and director on his plays. In total, Richman was to be seen on Broadway in 30 plays by 1936.
Charles Richman first starred in a film in 1914, when he was nearly 50 years old. During the silent film era, he was the lead actor in several lavish films, some of which were film adaptations of his Broadway successes. In the mid-1930s he regularly took on supporting roles in Hollywood films. Because of his stately appearance, Richman embodied mostly authority figures such as judges, company bosses, high-ranking military or politicians. He starred in the Oscar-winning biography The Life of Emile Zola (1937), the judge Thatcher in the Mark Twain film adaptation of Tom's Adventure and an officer in Victims of a Great Love alongside Bette Davis . Richman also appeared in a supporting role in Becky Sharp , the first Technicolor film . In total, Richman made over 65 films.
Richman retired from acting in 1939 and passed away a year later at the age of 75. He had been married to Jane Gray from 1900 until his death. They had a son and a daughter.
