August Mike Michalske (* 24. April 1903 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 26. October 1983 in Green Bay , Wisconsin ) Nickname : Iron Mike was a US American football poker players and - coach . Among other things, he played as a guard in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

college

Michalske played from 1923 to 1925 at Pennsylvania State University ( Penn State ). In the first two years he was mainly a guard, but had to switch to the position of fullback in his third year with the Penn State Nittany Lions . In 1923 he was able to move into the Rose Bowl with his team , but had to admit defeat there to the USC Trojans of the University of Southern California team 14: 3. Michalske was named All-American and switched to the professional field in 1926.

In 1926 Michalske joined the New York Yankees . A team that initially played for a year in the newly formed American Football League (AFL) and then was based in the NFL for two years. The exceptionally fast, agile and strong Michalske was responsible for protecting the running back Red Grange among other things . Michalske also played in defense and was often on the field for the entire season (which earned him his nickname).

After the New York City team went bankrupt, Michalske waived part of his salary and moved to the Green Bay Packers . With the team he was able to win the NFL championship in 1929, 1930 and 1931 . Michalske retired in 1936, and in 1937 ran again for the Packers for a year.

Coaching career

Michalske worked as a coach after his playing career. From 1942 to 1946 he was head coach at Iowa State University . His team won 18 of 39 games. Michalske is buried in Woodlan Cemetery in Allouez , Wisconsin.

Honors

Michalske is a member of the NFL 1920s All-Decade Team . He was voted All-Pro seven times . As the first guard in football history, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964. He has also been in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame since 1970 ,
