history

After the Chicago Bears the salary demands of their player Harold Grange did not want to meet these wanted in New York City its own franchise of the National Football League to build. The owner of the New York Giants , Tim Mara , opposed this. Grange then founded his own league. In addition to eight new teams, including Granges New York Yankees , the new league, the Rock Island Independents, was also a founding member of the NFL. However, the league could not hold up. With the exception of the Yankees, every team played in front of almost empty stadiums. The reason for the lack of spectators was the bad weather and poor offensive performance. In 41 games there were only 42 touchdowns despite the signing of many stars . After only one month of play, the Newark Bears and the Cleveland Panthers had to give up. The Brooklyn Horseman , who merged with local rival from the NFL, Brooklyn Lions , followed shortly afterwards , the Boston Bulldogs and the Independents. At the end of the season there were only four teams left, three of them thanks to a large amount of financial help from Grange's advisor, CC Pyle . The Philadelphia Quakers became champions of the league . After that season, the league was dissolved. After the Lions bankruptcy, the Grange Yankees entered the NFL.
