Hendrika Entzian (* 1984 in Kiel ) is a German jazz musician ( double bass , composition , arrangement ).

Live and act

Entzian gained his first musical experience in the children's choir . As a primary school student, she learned the piano, then the guitar and played in various bands. Before graduating from high school, she changed instrument again, eventually moving on to the double bass via the electric bass. Entzian began studying music in Hamburg with Lucas Lindholm (jazz) and Peter Schmidt (member of the NDR symphony orchestra , classical). In 2009 she moved to Cologne, where she studied at the University of Music and Dance until 2012 with Dieter Manderscheid and Sebastian Sternal , among others . In addition, she took further lessons in classical bass from Jürgen Fichtner (formerly solo bassist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra ). In addition to her participation in various Cologne projects, Entzian increasingly focused on composing. As a result, she completed a master's degree in jazz arrangement and composition, also in Cologne, with Joachim Ullrich , which she completed in 2015.

At the beginning of 2012, Entzian founded her quartet with the pianist Simon Seidl and the drummer Fabian Arends . Maxi Jagow was initially on saxophone, followed by Matthew Halpin in 2016 . The quartet released the albums Turnus (2015) and Pivot (2017) and toured several times in Germany and neighboring countries. The band performed at the Ingolstädter Jazztage , JazzBaltica 2018, Winterjazz Cologne and the Eight Bridges Festival, among others . The concert at the INNtöne Jazzfestival on May 19, 2018 was recorded by Deutschlandfunk, here with Silvio Morger on drums. In 2018 and March 2019, Entzian performed with the WDR Big Band . In November 2018 she founded her own big band Hendrika Entzian +. The formation gave one of their first concerts at the WDR3 Jazzfest 2019 ; In April 2020 the album Marble was released with this formation .

Since she was a student, Entzian has also been writing and arranging for other large ensembles. These include the WDR Big Band, the Dutch Metropole Orkest , the Cologne Subway Jazz Orchestra and the Bujazzo ; Her composition Weekdays was included in the Bujazzo Future Music program in 2016 . She also plays in the quintet of the drummer Peter Weiss.

Entzian lives and works in Cologne . She teaches jazz theory / arrangement and composition at the music academy there and at the Liszt University of Music Weimar .

Prizes and awards

Entzian was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize 2018 in the composition category, which she received on February 2, 2018 in Gütersloh. In the same year Pivot was one of the three nominated albums for the Jazz-ECHO, category Newcomer. In 2015, Entzian received a jazz / pop scholarship for musicians from the Cologne University of Music and Dance.
