João Bosco (born July 13, 1946 in Ponte Nova , Minas Gerais , Brazil ), actually João Bosco de Freitas Mucci, is a Brazilian composer, singer and guitarist. He is very successful in the duo with the lyricist Aldir Blanc and became known as an interpreter of his own songs.

Life

João Bosco comes from a musical family. His mother and sister played the violin and the piano, respectively. At the age of 13 he made a name for himself as a singer and acoustic guitarist and founded his first band. At that time his passion was rock 'n' roll from Elvis to Little Richard . In the 1960s he studied engineering in Ouro Preto , Minas Gerais . Musically, he then made a swing in the direction of Bossa Nova , which was very fashionable at the time. By chance Bosco met the poet Vinícius de Moraes , whom he visited in Rio de Janeiro . Several common songs ( Rosa dos Ventos, Samba do Pouso and O Mergulhador ) were created.

In Rio de Janeiro, João Bosco also met the psychiatrist and songwriter Aldir Blanc. After completing his studies, João Bosco moved entirely to Rio de Janeiro. An extremely successful collaboration began. The bossa nova was no longer so popular, however, so that the "Mineiro" and the "Carioca" were forced to develop their own musical form.

The duo Bosco / Blanc had their first mutual success in 1972 with the composition "Bala com Bala", which the singer Elis Regina recorded at the time and which contributed so much to the popularity of the piece. A first own LP followed in 1973.

The big breakthrough for João Bosco as a singer and guitarist followed in 1982 with the LP " Commissão de Frente ". The title describes a group at the carnival parade. The record sold very well. The musician has a wide range of styles such as ballads, samba , rock or bossa nova. In addition to the brilliant technique on the acoustic guitar, João Bosco has a remarkable voice. He often uses scat singing , percussive with a strong Afro-Brazilian tinge. Many of João Bosco's pieces are characterized by a sweeping swing .

The lyrics of the songs of the duo Bosco / Blanc deal with people and their everyday life. A strong slang jargon is used, which Portuguese-speaking non-Brazilians are not always able to follow immediately.

João Bosco gives concerts around the world, played in Carnegie Hall in New York , performed seven times at the Montreux Jazz Festival and in 2007 made a tour through Brazil with the NDR Big Band .
