Aldir Blanc

Aldir Blanc Mendes (born September 2, 1946 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † May 4, 2020 there ) was a Brazilian composer , songwriter and cronista .

Aldir Blanc first studied psychology and graduated at the age of 20. He worked as a psychologist until 1973, when he began his music career.

During his studies he had his first success with the song Amigo é pra essas coisas. Other well-known songs he wrote in the 1970s were Ela and Bala com Bala.

In 1978 he had a great success with the compositions O Mestre-sala dos Mares and Dois pra Lá, dois pra Cá. He wrote a poem set to music for Charlie Chaplin's death .

He wrote songs that recalled victims of the military dictatorship , and many songs became important songs against the dictatorship. In 2013 a biography of the artist was published in Brazil.

Blanc suffered from social phobia and diabetes and was considered a quirky bibliophile ; he never traveled and very rarely left home.

His composing career spanned 50 years and he wrote more than 600 songs. Nana Caymmi , Elis Regina and other great singers sang songs by the composer. His music is also known in Portugal . He wrote the soundtracks for around 21 series, the film music for five films and two scripts. With his artist colleague João Bosco he has written more than 120 songs. As a writer, he wrote more than twelve books, which mainly included poems, song texts, essays and columns about Rio de Janeiro. This made him an important chronicler of the popular music of Brazil and Rio.

Aldir Blanc died in 2020 at the age of 73 in Rio de Janeiro as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
