Julian Wasserfuhr (* 12. December 1987 in Hückeswagen ) is a German trumpeter of modern jazz .

Live and act

Wasserfuhr came to the trumpet at the age of seven through his father Gerald, a clarinetist and music teacher. He first received private tuition from Dirk Pawelka and, at the age of eleven, was the youngest participant in the North Rhine-Westphalian state competition Jugend jazzt . At the age of 13 he received trumpet lessons from Klaus Osterloh . Three years later, Julian Wasserfuhr was accepted by Andy Haderer as the youngest student of jazz trumpet at the Musikhochschule in Cologne .

Wasserfuhr played in school and university big bands as well as in the JugendJazzOrchester NRW and during a stay in Boston as a guest soloist in Phil Wilson's Rainbow Big Band, alongside jazz musicians like Joe Lovano and Jon Faddis . He has received soloist prizes in various international competitions, was the winner of the Yamaha Trumpet Contest in 2004 and was awarded a scholarship at the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston. Together with his two years older brother Roman Wasserfuhr , he founded the Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr Quartet and recorded the album Remember Chet in November 2005 . Julian Wasserfuhr describes the trumpeter Chet Baker as a role model.

Jazzthing wrote about the debut CD: “Even if Julian Wasserfuhr still separates many notes from his role model, fed by bitter life experience, the youngster plays amazing choruses, which especially in the ballads radiate a lot of thoughtfulness and unaffected sentimentality. In 2013, Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr, together with the DJs Blank & Jones, received the German Jazz Award in Gold from the Federal Music Industry Association for their album RELAX jazzed based on the sales figures .
