Music & Aesthetics is a project that was founded in 1995 by Ludwig Holtmeier , Richard Klein, Eckehard Kiem and Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf .

The project pursues the following goals:

  • Development and dissemination of aesthetic reflection in and about music;
  • Research into the relationship between music and cultural or social sciences, especially philosophy ;
  • Work on a musical analysis, especially the latest music;
  • Building a musical aesthetic that includes music analysis, historical hermeneutics and aesthetic criticism;
  • Critical analysis of the relationship between theoretical musical speech and musical practice;
  • Communication of musical aesthetics with the "current" discourses of cultural and social sciences and philosophy, while maintaining the respective professional independence and professional standards.

Conception

The Society for Music and Aesthetics has been organizing events since 1996. From 1998 to 2006 she cooperated with the bludenzer days of contemporary music. In cooperation with her, the English book series New Music and Aesthetics in the 21st Century has been published since 2002 (edited by Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf , Frank Cox and Wolfram Schurig ), so far 8 volumes. Eckehard Kiem, Richard Klein and Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf were from 1998 to 2001 "scientific advisors" in the production of the "Stuttgarter Ring" at the Stuttgart State Opera . Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf and Johannes Menke have been publishing the sinefonia series of studies at Wolke Verlag since 2006.

The magazine Musik & Ästhetik is published by Ludwig Holtmeier, Richard Klein and Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf. So far she has published over 650 articles in a wide variety of fields. It is supported by well-known personalities from international musical and cultural life and cooperates with numerous employees all over the world. From 2004 to 2007 she was supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

In 2012 the Institute for Music and Aesthetics was founded. His focus areas are: music philosophy, autonomous music criticism, empirical-hermeneutic sociology of music, contemporary music, music theater, media work and practical expertise. It is headed by Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf and Peter Mixture, Richard Klein is the scientific director.
