Maximilian Hirning (* 1989) is a German double bass player and composer who works in both jazz and new music .

Act

Hirning first studied classical double bass at the Rostock University of Music and Theater . Then he began studying jazz double bass with Henning Sieverts at the Munich University of Music and Theater .

Since 2012 he has been a member of the Ensemble Neophon , with which he interprets new music. He also works as a freelance bassist and composer in the fields of creative jazz and analog techno music. He composes for bands like the Jazzrausch Bigband , with which he has also performed with Fiva .

LBT , the Leo Betzl Trio, is currently his main musical project, for which he composed the techno program Way Up in the Blue , which was released on Enja in 2018 . He also belonged to the bands of Johannes Meissner, Vincent Eberle and Matthias Lindermayr , with whom he is also documented on albums.

As a composer and performer he is also involved in theater projects such as Apocalypse (not Now) and metamorphosen by Franziska Angerer, THE SHELL & THE SHELTER by Gineke Pranger and in the dance performances Empathy , Toni Is Lonely and everything blue by Jasmine Ellis.

Prizes and awards

With LBT he won the Hansjörg-Henzler-Jazzpreis of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Jazz in 2016, which he also received in 2017 with the Vincent Eberle Quintet. In the following year he won the German Jazz Prize with this band ; Hirning was also awarded the Soloist Prize of the New German Jazz Prize.

With LBT and the techno program he composed, he won the final of the BMW Welt Jazz Award in 2018 , and in 2019 the jazz prize for young talent at the Burghausen Jazz Week .
