Franz Xaver Barth

Franz Xaver Barth (born January 12, 1821 in Velden , † February 19, 1894 in Munich ) was a history painter and fresco artist who worked in Bavaria.

Barth studied from April 6, 1837 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Peter von Cornelius and later with Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld , whom he helped with the execution of the last Nibelung Hall in the royal Munich residence .

Together with Christoph Friedrich Nilson , Michael Echter , Augustin Palme and Alois Süßmayr , he worked on the execution of frescoes based on Wilhelm von Kaulbach's designs in the new Pinakothek .

In the Munich court theater he created the figures of the nine muses in the ceiling panels of the auditorium.

With Johann Georg Hiltensperger he painted the cycle of fifteen pictures in encaustic for the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg .

In the historical gallery of the Bavarian National Museum he created four large frescos with warlike and peaceful scenes from the life of the Bavarian princes.

Franz Xaver Barth helped Moritz von Schwind with the execution of tempera pictures in the Vienna State Opera .

Franz Xaver Barth also painted oil paintings mostly on religious subjects, including many altar leaves.

On behalf of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Barth painted a “Bavaria” that protects the arts in the hall of Trausnitz Castle near Landshut .

In the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Landshut he created seven frescoes with the "Works of Mercy".

He also supplied designs to the Munich glass painting company by Joseph Gabriel Mayer and Franz Xaver Zettler .
