Schnorr drew Echter to his wall paintings in the Königsbau (→ Munich Residence ), and Leo von Klenze arranged for him commissions in Kronstadt and Pulkowa. In 1847 Echter accompanied Wilhelm von Kaulbach to Berlin to support him with the execution of the wall paintings in the stairwell of the Neues Museum .

In 1860 he completed the Battle of Hungary on the Lechfeld in 955 for the Maximilianeum in Munich , then the Treaty of Pavia on the outside of the Maximilianeum and Friedrich Rotbart's marriage to Beatrix of Burgundy and the funeral of Walther von der Vogelweide in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich.

His most important works include paintings such as: Telegraphy and rail traffic in the departure hall of Munich Central Station . In the Theatinergang or Nibelungengang of the Munich Residence, Echter painted 30 murals from the saga of the Nibelungenring, and he also made numerous watercolors for King Ludwig II based on Wagner's operas .

Since 1875 Echter, who was previously considered to be very healthy, suffered from an illness that made him almost unable to move. When he had recovered from this after a stay in a Swiss spa, he developed an eye disease that, despite several operations, finally left him blind. In addition, he was now plagued by a progressive stomach ailment that led to his death in 1879. His grave is on the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich (Grave field 27 - row 12 - place 2) location .
