Alois Süßmayr (also Aloys or Süßmeier ; born January 15, 1825 in Landsberg am Lech ; † December 9, 1885 in Eichstätt ) was a German painter in the art style of the Nazarenes as well as a draftsman and drawing teacher.

Live and act

He was a student of Johann von Schraudolph , with whom he also learned fresco painting. From 1846 he helped him with the painting of the Speyer Cathedral , which was removed from 1957–1961. A monumental painting “Stephanus in front of the High Council” , which Süssmayr created there in 1848 on the basis of his teacher’s model, has been preserved and now hangs, newly placed, in the imperial hall of the cathedral.

Like Schraudolph, Alois Süßmayr was one of the artists favored by the Bavarian King Ludwig I. During the construction of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, he was commissioned with the large frescoes "Glass painting" and "Porcelain painting" , based on Friedrich Kaulbach's designs , on the outside of the building. They were destroyed with the Pinakothek in the Second World War.

The painting of St. Ludwig's Church in Ludwigshafen , which was particularly dear to the king and named after him, was also assigned to Sussmayr. Here he created u. a. a large fresco of the Last Supper as the central choir picture. All of the paintings there were lost in the bombing of the church in January 1945.

The Catholic St. Margaret Church in Forst an der Weinstrasse has a large oil painting Alois Süßmayr's handing over of the shepherd's crook to St. Petrus .

In 1846, Süßmayr painted the St. Magnus Church in Oberbergen , the pictures have been whitewashed since 1966.

In Böhming near Eichstätt , the nave ceiling of the branch church of St. John the Baptist is painted by him.

Alois Süßmayr had lived in Eichstätt since 1856 and worked there as a drawing teacher at the Royal School Teachers' College and at the Royal College, which later became Willibald High School, until his death . In his later days he made the title vignette of the book Das Oberammergauer Passions-Spiel with the Passion pictures by A. Dürer in 1870 , as well as the title vignette for the book Munich laughing pictures , by Karl Zettel in 1871 .
