Leo Betzl

Leo Betzl (* 1991 in Rosenheim ) is a German jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Live and act

Betzl, who grew up in Großkarolinenfeld , received classical piano lessons from the age of seven. At the age of ten he began to play rock music on the keyboard ; since 2002 he has been active in the rock band Red Stingray . He was also influenced by his father's CD collection; when he was 15 he gave him an album by Michel Camilo . Since this music fascinated him, he began to play autodidactically in this direction. Between 2011 and 2015 he completed his Bachelor's degree in Jazz Piano with a minor in Classics at the University of Music and Theater in Munich with Tizian Jost . From 2015 to 2017, she completed a master’s degree at the same university.

He played with the drummer Sebastian Wolfgruber, whom he already knew before, from the beginning of his studies. The Trio LBT was formed in the third semester , and the current line-up with Maximilian Hirning on the double bass has existed since 2013 . He has already released two albums with LBT . He also plays in the Valentin Preissler Quartet and the Vincent Eberle Quintet as well as with the Earforce Bigband , with Roman Sladek's Jazzrausch Bigband and the Christian Elsässer Jazz Orchester . He has also appeared with Terry Lyne Carrington , Dusko Goykovich and Jason Seizer .

Prizes and awards

Betzl won first place in the Steinway solo piano competition in 2014 and second prize in the Yamaha solo piano competition for the Bavarian music academies in 2015. The Munich University of Music presented Betzl with the Kurt Maas Jazz Award 2015 (which was linked to a summer course at Berklee College of Music ). In the same year he received the Bavarian Art Prize in the music category. In 2016, he not only received the cultural sponsorship award in his native Rosenheim, but also the Hansjörg-Henzler Jazz Award from the State Jazz Association. With LBT , he won the final of the BMW Welt Jazz Award in 2018 , and in 2019 the young talent jazz prize of the Burghausen Jazz Week.
