Chuck Owen

Chuck Owen (* 1954 ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , orchestral direction, arrangement , composition ) and university professor.

Live and act

Owen earned a BA from North Texas State University and a Masters of Arts in orchestral conducting from California State University, Northridge . The first recordings were made in 1978 with the California State University ensemble ( Let's Eat Cactus ). In the following years he taught at the University of South Florida , with whose jazz ensemble he worked and recorded the albums Day of the Sun (1985), Sands of Time (1985) and Suncoast '94 . Since 1995 he has been professor of jazz studies at this university, as well as director of the USF Center for Jazz Composition and the USF Jazz Ensemble . He also leads the big band Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge in Florida , which has appeared with guest musicians such as Nat Adderley , Benny Golson , Warren Bernhardt , Adam Nussbaum (1995) and Ingrid Jensen and Gary Versace ( Here We Are , 2003).

Owen wrote compositions a. a. for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra , the Metropole Orkest, the Tonight Show Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra , the Dave Liebman Big Band and Roger Williams. With the USF Jazz Ensemble he has performed with soloists such as Ray Charles , Doc Severinsen , Al Hirt , Lionel Hampton , Joe Henderson and Peter Erskine . He also worked as an arranger with the Metropole Orkest ( Skylark , 1999). Around 2009 Owen's big band production Comet's Tail - Performing the Compositions of Michael Brecker was created , in which guest musicians such as Randy Brecker , David Liebman , Joe Lovano , Mike Stern , Danny Gottlieb and Adam Nussbaum participated. In the field of jazz he was involved in ten recording sessions between 1978 and 2009.

In late 2017, Owen's album Whispers on the Wind was nominated for the 2018 Grammy Awards in the Best Large Ensemble Album category; Owen's album received further nominations in the categories Best Improvised Jazz Solo (for Sara Caswell's solo in Can't Remember Why ), Best Instrumental Composition (for Owen's composition Warped Cowboy ) and for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella (for Owens' arrangement by All Hat, No Saddle ).
