Joe Ascione

Joseph "Joe" Ascione (* 14. March 1961 in Brooklyn , New York City ; † 11. March 2016 ) was an American jazz - drummer of the swing and mainstream jazz .

Live and act

Ascione grew up on Long Island and began to drum as a two-year-old; when he was four he got his first drum kit and when he was twelve he made his first professional appearances. As a teenager he was a roadie for Buddy Rich , who was his role model alongside Gene Krupa . Ascione played in his career with Cab Calloway , Kenny Davern , Joey DeFrancesco , Herb Ellis , Lars Erstrand , Donald Fagen , Johnny Frigo , David Grisman , George Coleman , Bobby Gordon , Al Hirt ,Jon Hendricks , Dick Hyman , Jerry Jerome , Dr. John , Jon-Erik Kellso , Billy Mitchell , Flip Phillips , Della Reese , Phoebe Snow , Allan Vaché , Frank Vignola and Bob Wilber , also as session musicians for the mainstream label Nagel-Heyer Records . Since the end of the 90s he has also worked with his own formations, with which he presented several albums for Nagel-Heyer and Arbors . His debut as a Leader was a tribute album for Buddy Rich. a. James Chirillo , Randy Sandke , Dan Barrett, and Bob Haggart contributed. He died in March 2016 of multiple sclerosis complications from his illness .
