Joseph Edward "Flip" Phillips (* 26. March 1915 in New York City , New York; † 17th August 2001 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida) was an American jazz - tenor saxophonist and clarinetist .

Life

Phillips first played the clarinet with Frankie Newton (1940-1941) and saxophone with Larry Bennett (1942-1943). From 1944 to 1946 he worked in Woody Hermans First Herd . He became known through his long appearances on the Jazz-at-the-Philharmonic tours of Norman Granz from 1946 to 1957. He also took part in the Granz music film Improvisation (1950). In 1959 he went to Europe with Benny Goodman and then led a quartet in Pompano Beach ( Florida ).

Philipps was one of the impulsive tenor saxophonists of the late swing era. During a long career he was featured on many albums; When he was over 80, he finally recorded the CD Swing is the Thing for Verve Records .
