Richard Wyands

Richard Wyands (born July 2, 1928 in Oakland, California , † September 25, 2019 in New York City ) was an American jazz pianist .

Live and act

Wyands started his musical career in the Bay Area in 1944 and played with many local bands until 1956. a. worked with Cal Tjader's band. He was a member of the house band in the Black Hawk - and Facks - jazz clubs . In 1956 he was Ella Fitzgerald's companion for three months , worked in Ottawa for a few months, went on tour with Carmen McRae , and came to New York City in March 1958 . He played with Charles Mingus ( Jazz Portraits - Mingus In Wonderland , 1959). Between 1965 and 1975 he was a member of Kenny Burrell's band .

He has also worked with Gigi Gryce , Jerome Richardson , Oliver Nelson , Benny Bailey , Etta Jones and Von Freeman and leads his own trio. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 137 recording sessions between 1949 and 2012, according to Tom Lord . a. also with Charlie Mariano , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Roy Haynes ., Gene Ammons , Taft Jordan , Roland Kirk , Freddie Hubbard , Esther Phillips , Harold Ashby , Zoot Sims , Budd Johnson , Art Davis , Pam Purvis , Carl Fontana , Doc Cheatham , Spike Robinson , Illinois Jacquet , Slam Stewart , Benny Carter , Eric Alexander , Frank Wess , Warren Vaché , Teddy Edwards , Michael Hashim , Jay Leonhart , Jimmy Cobb , Ralph LaLama , Houston Person , Peter Bernstein and Scott Robinson .

His musical idols include Wyands Teddy Wilson , Art Tatum , Bud Powell , Oscar Peterson and Hampton Hawes .
