Half and Half is a jazz album by pianist Richard Wyands . The trio recordings with drummer Kenny Washington and bassist Peter Washington were made on December 8, 1999 and were released on April 18, 2000 on Criss Cross Jazz .

background

In All About Jazz , C. Andrew Hovan noted at the time of the release of Wyands' album that only The Arrival ( DIW Records ), Get Out of Town on SteepleChase Records and the previous album Reunited were available under his own name . During this time Wyands was mainly an accompanist a. a. worked for Ralph Lalama ( Music for Grown Ups , 1998), Houston Person , ( Soft Lights , 1999) and Etta Jones ( Easy Living , 2000).

The album Half and Half contained jazz standards such as "Daydream" by Billy Strayhorn and "Time After Time" by Sammy Cahn / Jule Styne as well as three original compositions by Wyands, including the title track "Half and Half", which Wyands had written when he was a member of the Gigi Gryce Quintet in the 1950s, but was not recorded until that session. The album contains two solo pieces, "Beautiful Friendship" and "Time After Time".

Wyands remembered the song "PS I Love You" in the 1940s in the version of Mary Ann McCall , then a singer with Woody Herman and His Orchestra . The pianist knew "Beautiful Friendship" from the time he worked with Ella Fitzgerald ; "As Long as I Live," which he knew in the version by Benny Goodman , Wyands played in a duo with Maxine Sullivan .

reception

According to Al Cambbell, who gave the album four (out of 5) stars in Allmusic , Richard Wyands mostly stuck to standard material during this session for Criss Cross. His two companions, the drummer Kenny Washington and the bassist Peter Washington would easily adapt to the respective form and slide from ballads to bebop to bossa nova .

C. Andrew Hovan reviewed the album for All About Jazz and said, although Wyands had participated in numerous recording sessions of mainstream jazz since the 1950s , he surprisingly recorded very few times under his own name. recorded. The author particularly highlights his interpretations of “Beautiful Friendship” and “Time After Time,” “which best illustrate the magic of Wyands, which are full of rich chord passages and well-developed ideas that demand attention.” His own pieces, especially the title track and “Blues for Kosi” both indicated a latent talent in the compositional field. The author also praises the “more than competent support” from bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington. Half and Half turn out to be “another rock solid piano trio affair” in the pianist's work.
