African rheas sheljuzhkoi is one of two known representatives of many spines (Polycentridae) in Africa . It occurs in the south of the Ivory Coast between Abidjan and Agboville . The fish wasdescribedas Nandopsis sheljuzhkoi by Hermann Meinken , the former head of the fish identification office of the Association of German Societies for Aquarium and Terrarium Studies, after four type specimens caught by Leo Sheljuzhko, and named after its catcher. The genus name was laterchangedto Afronandus , as Nandopsis was already a subgenus of the cichlid genus Cichlasoma .

features

Afronandus sheljuzhkoi reaches a length of 4.8 cm. The appearance corresponds to that of a typical spiny dog with a large head and a large, steeply erect mouth with a deeply cut, very flexible mouth. The fish is laterally flattened, but much more elongated than other multi-spined fish and without a side line . The eyes are in the front part of the head and are large. Its color is marbled light to dark brown, darker on the head and neck and along the dorsal fin, lighter on the abdomen. Some of the animals, probably the males, have metallic, bluish, shiny scales on the sides. The fins are black-brown, the ventral and caudal fins are a little lighter. The edges of the mouth are blackish. The anal fin is relatively short.

The scales are ctenoid scales and are pretty much the same size.
