Cichlasoma is a genus of the cichlids (Cichlidae). They live in tropical South America east of the Andes , in waters with clear and white water .

features

Cichlasoma - types are similar to those of the genus Aequidens , in contrast to these they have a bright rimmed spot at the base of its dorsal fin , a dark front of the gill cover and an irregular spot on the caudal fin . The fish usually have six horizontal stripes on the sides of their bodies. Their scales are relatively large, the bases of the dorsal and anal fin are more or less scaled in contrast to Aequidens , Krobia , Bujurquina , Tahuantinsuyoa , most of the Laetacara and Nannacara . Wild fish usually do not grow longer than ten centimeters, with some species the males can also be 15 centimeters long, females always stay smaller.

species

Originally, Cichlasoma was a collective genus to which almost 200 species, including Central American and very large species, were counted. After genera that had long been synonymous with Cichlasoma became valid again (e.g. Amphilophus , Archocentrus , Caquetaia , Herichthys , Heros , Hoplarchus , Hypselecara , Paraneetroplus , Theraps , Thorichthys and Tomocichla ) or after the establishment of new genera ( Amatitlania , Cincelichthys , Chiapaheros , Chocoheros , Cryptoheros , Isthmoheros , Mayaheros , Mesoheros , Rocio , Talamancaheros and Trichromis ) for species formerly assigned to Cichlasoma , the following species are currently still classified in the genus Cichlasoma .
